Erich Bethe

Erich Julius Adolf Bethe (born May 2, 1863 in Stettin , † October 19, 1940 in Leipzig ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Erich Bethe was a son of the Szczecin doctor Eduard Bethe (* 1828; † 1910) and his wife Marie Gerstaecker (* 1830; † 1917) from Berlin, a niece of the travel writer Friedrich Gerstäcker . His brother Martin Bethe became a doctor and also worked as a genealogist, his brother Albrecht Bethe became a professor of physiology.

Bethe studied classical philology, history and archeology in Greifswald and Göttingen , where he received his doctorate in 1887 under Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff . He then continued his studies in Bonn (with Georg Loeschcke ), where he completed his habilitation in 1891 . After three years as a private lecturer in Bonn and extensive travels in the Mediterranean region, he married the painter Margarete Loewe in 1894 and went to Rostock University as an associate professor . In 1897 Bethe moved to Basel as a full professor , and in 1903 to Giessen . In 1906 he accepted an appointment at the University of Leipzig , where he taught and researched until his retirement in 1931. In the academic year 1927/1928 he was rector of the university.

After the transfer of power , Bethe signed on November 11, 1933, the professors' commitment to Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist state at German universities and colleges .
