Christian Kortholt the Elder (born January 15, 1633 in Burg auf Fehmarn , † April 2, 1694 in Kiel ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

After studying in Rostock , he received his master's degree there in 1656 , continued his studies in Jena with Johannes Musaeus and Sebastian Niemann (theologian) and in 1657 became an adjunct at the Philosophical Faculty. In Rostock he became professor of Greek in 1663 after successfully completing his doctorate and in 1664 he became a full professor of theology. After his appointment to the young Christian Albrechts University in 1665, he turned down appointments to professorships and general superintendent positions . In 1675 he was appointed professor primarius. In 1688 he was appointed procurator of the university for life. His research focus was church history.

Kortholt advocated lively piety and thus also for reforms in church life. He corresponded with Philipp Jacob Spener from 1670 and initially supported his Pia desideria . Only towards the end of his life did he turn against pietism in the course of the disputes over Johann Wilhelm Petersen and Johann Heinrich Horb .

His students included August Hermann Francke and Joachim Justus Breithaupt .
