Joachim Justus Breithaupt
Joachim Justus Breithaupt (born February 17, 1658 in Northeim ; † March 16, 1732 in Berge monastery near Magdeburg ) was a German Lutheran theologian , homileticist and hymn poet .
Life
The son of the superintendent Christian Breithaupt studied from April 12, 1676 in Helmstedt and in 1680 became deputy principal in Wolfenbüttel . Due to the plague , he left school and continued his theological studies with Christian Kortholt the Elder in Kiel . He then worked as a private lecturer in Frankfurt am Main . In 1687 he, who was influenced by Philipp Jakob Spener , was called back to Kiel as a homileticist. In 1685 he became court preacher and consistorial councilor in Meiningen , in 1687 pastor at the Erfurt Predigerkirche , senior of the spiritual ministry and professor of theology. He supported the deacon of the Augustinian Church August Hermann Francke , who was controversial because of his pietistic attitude. In 1691, when Francke had to leave Erfurt, Breithaupt accepted the call to the theological faculty of the young University of Halle . He remained at the same time cathedral preacher and consistorial councilor in Magdeburg.
In 1705, Breithaupt became general superintendent of the Duchy of Magdeburg, and in 1709 abbot of the Magdeburg monastery and the Berge monastery near Magdeburg.
He wrote numerous Latin and some German poems. Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen recorded four of his sacred songs in his "sacred hymn book", which appeared in 1704 in Halle.
