Johannes Wallmann
Johannes Wallmann (born May 21, 1930 in Erfurt ; † January 2, 2021 in Berlin ) was a German Protestant theologian and full professor of church history at the Ruhr University in Bochum .
Life
After studying philosophy and evangelical theology in Berlin ( Humboldt University ), Wallmann received his doctorate in 1961 under Gerhard Ebeling in Zurich . After fleeing the GDR, he continued his studies at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , completed his habilitation in 1968 at the Evangelical Theological Faculty at the Ruhr University Bochum (with a study on Philipp Jakob Spener that had already begun in Tübingen ) and was initially there associate professor for church history in 1971 until he retired in 1995 . He refused calls to Tübingen and Berlin.
His research focus was, in addition to the Reformation , the history of Lutheran Orthodoxy and Pietism . A long-term project was the edition of Philipp Jakob Spen's letters . He was co-editor of the yearbook Pietism and Modern Times as well as the Halle Researches . Udo Sträter and Martin Friedrich were among his students .
Wallmann was an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki , a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts and, since 2002, honorary professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin .
In 1963 Wallmann married Ingeborg Posselt, who died in 1996. He had two children with her. Since 1999 he was married to the theology professor Dorothea Wendebourg .
Johannes Wallmann died in January 2021 at the age of 90 from complications from COVID-19 .
