Udo Sträter (born April 10, 1952 in Bottrop ) is a German church historian, university professor and was rector of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 2010 to 2018 .

Life

Udo Sträter studied history and German studies and passed both the master's degree and the state examination. He then studied Protestant theology and passed the theological exam in 1983 . In 1984 he received a scholarship from the German Historical Institute in London , and in 1985 he received his doctorate in church history on Sonthom, Bayly, Dyke and Hall: Studies on the reception of English devotional literature in Germany in the 17th century at the Ruhr University in Bochum . He then worked until 1989 as a research assistant on the edition of Philipp Jakob Spener's letters . From 1989 to 1990 he was a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation and in 1991 again completed his habilitation in the subject of church history at the Ruhr University in Bochum. His academic achievements were followed by a vicariate in a parish of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia , while he was also a private lecturer at the Ruhr University in Bochum.

In 1992 he was appointed Professor of Church History at the Theological Faculty of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, where he was Dean of the Theological Faculty from 1994 to 1996 and Vice Rector for Studies, Teaching and Young Academics at the University from 1996 to 1998. From 1996 to 2002 he was the rector's representative for the university jubilee 500 years University of Halle-Wittenberg , and from 1998 to 2000 chairman of the council.

In October 2010 the investiture took place as rector of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. After eight years in office, he did not run again. Christian Tietje followed him .

Sträter has been a member of the Historical Commission for Research into Pietism since 1992 and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Luther Memorials Foundation of the State of Saxony-Anhalt since 1997 . In 2018 he was elected honorary chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Francke Foundations , of which he has been a member since 2010.

His research focuses on Lutheran Orthodoxy, European piety movements in the early modern period and the history of Pietism .
