Torgeir Bjarmann (born June 24, 1968 in Lørenskog ) is a former Norwegian football player and current football official.

The long-time captain of Lillestrøm SK is the club's all-time record player with a total of 613 competitive appearances, 306 of which have been in first division games to date (as of October 2010) . With the exception of a four-month stay at the Austrian first division club LASK Linz , he has spent his entire career at LSK .

He was named to the Tippeligaen Team of the Decade in an election conducted by Norwegian television broadcaster TV2 in 2010. In 2001 he also received the Kniksenprisen as "Defender of the Year" in the Tippeligaen . He is considered one of the best players who was never allowed to play for the Norwegian national football team .

Club career

Bjarmann began his career in the youth of his home club Lørenskog IF and Skedsmo FK before joining the youth team of Lillestrøm SK in 1987 .

After a year in youth, he made his professional debut for LSK in 1988 under coach Owe Rundberg. After the runner-up title in 88, he then celebrated the championship title in the 1st division as a supplementary player in his second professional game under coach David Hay . This was followed by the departure of veteran Arne Erlandsen to Strømsgodset IF whereupon Bjarmann became a regular player for the first time. Although you only had to give up three top performers apart from Erlandsen, Bård Bjerkeland for 1. FC Nürnberg - and Jan Åge Fjørtoft, who moved to SK Rapid Wien in Austria , the team slipped with players like Dennis Schiller , Erik Solér , Tom Gulbrandsen , Gunnar Halle , Frode Grodås , or Geir Frigård over the season in the table cellar and barely managed to stay in the league.

From 1991 you could establish yourself again in the upper third of the table and despite constant departures of high performers until 1999 always occupy a place in the top four, but without being able to repeat the championship title. In the early 90s Bjarmann had formed a successful duo with the Swede Schiller, but from 1994 he was converted into a Libero , which made him one of the strongest defenders in the Tippeligaen. After the two outstanding seasons in 1999 and 2000, in which he was also elected to the team of the season, a transfer abroad then paved the way.

After a failed move to the Scottish Premier League in December 1999, the then Austrian Bundesliga club FC Kärnten reported great interest in signing the player. After you had already agreed with the player, you could not agree with LSK on the transfer fee, after which he stayed in Norway for another season.

In June 2000 VfB Admira Wacker Mödling reported Bjarmann's commitment, which turned out to be a false report only days later. Those responsible for Admira had specifically spread the false report in order to take other interested parties such as LASK Linz out of the race for the obligation. Bjarmann himself favored the traditional Norwegian branch LASK, where his friend Geir Frigård from earlier LSK times was under contract. As the absolute dream player of coach Marinko Koljanin , who wanted him to replace the defensive boss Željko Milinović who had migrated to the Grazer AK , LASK was subsequently in the favorite position for an obligation, but could not afford the transfer fee due to the tense financial club situation. In order to get the player after all, they agreed with Lillestrøm to switch to a loan deal with an option to buy after the end of the Norwegian season in October.

Due to an injury, he was then from October to February 2001 in only three league games in which he was able to score a goal before the loan contract expired. The club, shortly before bankruptcy due to the "Rieger Affair" , had to go into drastic austerity and could not take the option to buy. Bjarmann then went back to LSK, LASK hired its much cheaper compatriot Kjetil Pedersen as a replacement.

Back in Norway he then played his strongest season under his former teammate and then coach Arne Erlandsen. As captain and head of defense, he scored seven goals this season and acted as a thinker and leader from the defensive, from which the then congenial offensive trio Arild Sundgot , Clayton Zane and Magnus Powell benefited in particular . In the championship, a duel between LSK and series champion Rosenborg Trondheim developed for the title, which was gambled away by a 1: 2 home defeat against RBK five rounds before the end of the season. In addition to the runner-up title, Bjarmann was awarded the Kniksenprisen as the best defensive player, which was the first time he was able to assert himself against Rosenborg defense boss Erik Hoftun , who received this award in the last five years.

In a row Bjarmann played two seasons without a title win for Lillestrøm, before he let his career end in 2004 with his hometown club Lørenskog IF in the Norwegian amateur league. In 2008, at the age of 40, he started a comeback at Skedsmo FK, for whom he played in several league games and scored his last goal as an active player.

After the active career

In September 2005 he took over the post of sports director at the then Norwegian first division club FK Lyn Oslo . Together with Henning Berg , who was also appointed Lyn's coach, they then established themselves as a successful team in Norway.

In the debut season, the club was led straight away from the relegation regions in the title fight, which was only just lost three points behind master Vålerenga Oslo . Due to major financial problems, Bjarmann was then forced to sell the best players, such as Chinedu Obasi, to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for a profit in order to keep the club alive. Despite the limited financial resources, he managed to form a powerful team with Berg year after year. During his tenure, players such as Ståle Stensaas , Matías Almeyda , Eddie Gustafsson , Magnus Powell and Diego Guastavino were signed , most of whom became team supports. Furthermore, he generated a transfer surplus of almost 15 million euros, 12 of which were due to the sales of John Obi Mikel and Obasi, which in the end could not save the club from bankruptcy in 2010.

Bjarmann had previously moved to his parent club Lillestrøm SK together with Berg in January 2009 , where they continue to work as a sports director / coach duo. Previously, the club, with 12th place in the table, had just barely missed relegation. For the 2009 season they again occupied a place in the secured midfield of the league.
