Gunnar Halle (born August 11, 1965 in Larvik ) is a former Norwegian football player . Between 1991 and 2002 he played for the English clubs Oldham Athletic , Leeds United Bradford City and the Wolverhampton Wanderers . With the Norwegian national team he took part in the soccer world championships in 1994 and 1998 .

Player career

First stations in Norway (until 1990)

After his first position at the lower-class club Larvik Turn , Halle moved to the Norwegian first division club Lillestrøm SK in 1985 . By 1990 he played 128 league games and scored 12 goals. With the club from Lillestrøm he won the Norwegian Cup in 1985 (4-1 against Vålerenga Oslo), as well as the Norwegian championship in 1986 and 1989 .

Oldham Athletic (1991-1996)

On February 15, 1991, the 25-year-old defender moved for a transfer fee of £ 250,000 to the English second division Oldham Athletic and rose with his new team in the first division. With the league newcomer, Halle reached relegation in the Football League First Division in 1991/92 as seventeenth in the table. Also in the newly introduced Premier League 1992/93 , the club around Gunnar Halle (41 league games / 5 goals) held the class, before relegation to the second division in the 1993/94 season after three years of first class. After two and a half more years in Oldham , Halle left the club in the first half of the 1996/97 season and moved to first division club Leeds United on December 13, 1996 for £ 500,000 .

Leeds United (1996-1999)

With United, Halle reached fifth place in the 1997/98 Premier League (33 league games / 2 goals) and thus qualified for the 1998/99 UEFA Cup . In the European Cup, however, the club failed in the second round against the Italian representative AS Roma (0: 1 and 0: 0). In 1998/99 the club improved by one position to fourth place. Gunnar Halle, however, played only seventeen league games (two hits) and moved to Bradford City after the season .

Bradford City (1999-2002)

His new club had previously been promoted to the Premier League for the first time and reached relegation in his debut season as seventeenth in the Premier League 1999/2000 . The 34-year-old Gunnar Halle played all thirty-eight league games. After relegation as bottom of the Premier League 2000/01 , he spent the final stages of the 2001/02 season on loan with Wolverhampton Wanderers .

After a last season in Norway with Lillestrøm SK , he ended his professional career in 2003.

Norwegian national team (1987-1999)

Gunnar Halle made his debut on November 14, 1987 in a 4-0 defeat in Bulgaria for the Norwegian national team. After successfully qualifying for the World Cup , Norway achieved a World Cup final for the first time since the 1938 World Cup when it took part in the 1994 World Cup in the USA . The team around Erik Thorstvedt , Rune Bratseth , Stig Inge Bjørnebye , Alf-Inge Haaland , Lars Bohinen and Gunnar Halle had surprisingly left the favorite national teams of the Netherlands and England behind. After being nominated for the Norwegian World Cup squad , the 28-year-old Halle played two of the three group games (1-0 against Mexico , 0-1 against Italy and 0-0 against Ireland ), but his team retired tied with all three group opponents the preliminary round.

The 32-year-old Gunnar Halle achieved another World Cup participation when he was nominated for the Norwegian World Cup squad for the 1998 World Cup in France. In the final tournament, however, he was only used in the second group game against Scotland (1: 1). Norway lost 1-0 to Italy in the round of 16.

The defender scored three of his five international goals on September 9, 1992 in a 10-0 home win against San Marino .
