The Oblast Sofia City ( Bulgarian Област София-град / Oblast Sofia-grad) is an administrative unit in the west of Bulgaria . It is enclosed in the north, east and south by the Sofia Oblast and in the west by the Pernik Oblast .
The Sofia Oblast is not to be confused with the Sofia Oblast (Софийска област / Sofijska oblast; literally: Sofia Oblast), the latter only encompassing the outskirts of Sofia, but not the actual city. What is particularly confusing is that the Sofia Oblast is often referred to as Sofia Oblast (Област София) for short , while the surrounding area is the Sofia Oblast .
The only municipality in the Sofia City Oblast is the officially designated capital municipality (Столична община / Stolschna obschtina; thus: the municipality of Sofia), which is divided into 24 districts (Bulgarian район / Rajon).
population
In the Oblast (district) Sofia city 1,325,429 (2017) inhabitants live on an area of 1348.9 km². 93.4% of the population of the oblast live in the capital Sofia, which, however, only covers 36.5% of the area of the oblast.
