Bankja , also Bankya or Bankia , is a city and a district in western Bulgaria . It was promoted to city in 1969 and has been part of Sofia City Oblast since 1979 .

The city is ten kilometers west of Sofia at the foot of Mount Lyulin at an average altitude of 695 meters. The economy is based on tourism and bathing. The district is known for its mineral springs and has a long history of medicinal treatments. The name of the town comes from the term bankja, which means hot springs and is a diminutive of banja (bath) .

The first recorded inhabitants were Thracians around 2500 years ago. Archaeological excavations have buildings from Roman times and bronze parts from the 4th – 5th centuries. Century proven. The first written mention as Bankja appears in the 15th century, the original villages Verdikal, Gradoman and Michailowo are now part of the city.

Bankja is the birthplace of Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov . In addition, the city since 2010, is named for is Bankya Peak , a mountain in Graham Land in Antarctica.
