Erik Thorstvedt (born October 28, 1962 in Stavanger ) is a former Norwegian football player .

Player career

Viking Stavanger

Erik Thorstvedt gained his first match practice in his Norwegian homeland at Eik-Tønsberg and Viking Stavanger before moving to the German first division club Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1986 .

Borussia Monchengladbach

Thorstvedt, who moved to Gladbach at the beginning of the season, made his debut in the Bundesliga in 1985/86 on the 23rd match day in a 2-0 away win at 1. FC Köln and played eight more league games by the end of the season. In the 1985/86 UEFA Cup , Gladbach had previously failed with his predecessor Ulrich Sude in the third round 5: 1 and 0: 4 at Real Madrid . In the 1986/87 season he played only the first three league games and in 1987 moved to the Swedish top club IFK Göteborg .

IFK Gothenburg

Gothenburg won the Swedish championship in 1987 at Fotbollsallsvenskan with coach Gunder Bengtsson and also secured the 1986/87 UEFA Cup title with goalkeeper Thomas Wernersson . In 1987 Wernersson ended his career after these successes and was replaced by Erik Thorstvedt. In the Fotbollsallsvenskan 1988 Gothenburg could not defend its title, but lost after a second place in the regular season in the semi-finals against Djurgårdens IF . In the European Cup of National Champions in 1988/89 , Gothenburg failed in the quarter-finals to Steaua Bucharest . Thorstvedt, however, had already switched to the English first division side Tottenham Hotspur in December 1988 .

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham finished the season in the Football League First Division 1988/89 in sixth place in the table. The following 1989/90 season led the team from North London to third place behind champions Liverpool FC and Aston Villa . The 1990/91 season was disappointing in the First Division with tenth place, but Thorstvedt and his teammates Gary Lineker , Paul Gascoigne and Pat Van Den Hauwe won the FA Cup 1990/91 with a 2-1 after extra time against Nottingham Forest . In the 1991/92 European Cup Winners' Cup , the end followed after successes over Hajduk Split and FC Porto in the quarter-finals against Feyenoord Rotterdam . In the English championship, Tottenham was not very successful after the departures of Lineker and Gascoigne. In the now introduced Premier League 1994/95 , 20 league goals from Jürgen Klinsmann only made for a seventh place in the table. In the 1995 UEFA Intertoto Cup , the Spurs clearly missed participation in the UEFA Cup. After another season in the Premier League in 1995/96 Thorstvedt ended his career in 1996 due to an injury at the age of 33.

Norwegian national team

Between 1982 and 1996 Erik Thorstvedt made 97 international matches for the Norwegian national soccer team . The highlight was participation in the 1994 soccer World Cup in the USA. Thorstvedt played all three preliminary round matches against Mexico, Italy and Ireland, but failed with his team very close due to the worst goal difference. Ten years earlier he had participated with Norway in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In this tournament, too, Norway was eliminated after the preliminary round after games against Chile, France and Qatar.
