Paul John Gascoigne (born May 27, 1967 in Gateshead , England ), nickname "Gazza", is a former English football player .

In his career, which he started with Newcastle United in 1984 and finished with Boston United in 2004 , he was a. a. active in the professional leagues of England , Scotland and Italy . He was also an English national player and took part in the 1990 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship . Gascoigne achieved cult status with the fans because of his sometimes brilliant style of play and, above all, his humorous contributions to teammates, coaches and referees . Outside of football, however, Gascoigne repeatedly came into negative public scrutiny due to his alcoholism and mobbing .

Career

1984–1988: Debut at Newcastle United

Gascoigne joined the youth team of Newcastle United in 1982 and played for the club two years later on April 13, 1984, his first professional game against Queens Park Rangers . He celebrated in the 1983/84 season for the time being his sporting successes in the youth field and was able to lead the youth team of Newcastle to victory in the FA Junior Cup. It was not until 1985, after Willie McFaul replaced Jack Charlton with the "Magpies" ( en. "Magpies") as coach, that Gazza slipped into the starting line-up of United.

He quickly became a crowd favorite and was also able to improve his performance from season to season. Accordingly, Gascoigne was nominated for the national team of England and made his international debut against Denmark on September 14, 1988 . In the club, however, the success remained modest: Newcastle only reached double-digit positions with no prospect of qualifying for a European Cup.

Therefore, Gascoigne decided at the end of the 1987/88 season to change clubs. Some well-known clubs in England had noticed him (e.g. Manchester United ) and he ended up joining Tottenham Hotspur for £ 2million .

Gascoigne experienced one of the most famous scenes in the Newcastle shirt in 1987 in a game against Wimbledon FC , when his opponent Vinnie Jones (nickname "The Ax ") grabbed him in the private area. He took it with humor, however, and sent Jones a rose in gratitude - Jones in turn returned the greeting and gave Gascoigne a toilet brush.

1988–1992: Rise to star

Gascoigne's start in London was not ideal. He was overweight in the pre-season and first had to improve his fitness again in order to assert himself in Terry Venables' team . Nevertheless, he reached sixth place with Tottenham at the end of the season and even third place in the following season. However, his big appearance still followed.

At the Soccer World Cup in Italy in 1990 he was one of the best midfielders in the tournament and led the English national team to the semi-finals, where they lost to Germany on penalties. In the course of this game Gascoigne got a yellow card, which would automatically have suspended him in the possible final. He then started crying on the pitch, which made him very popular in his home country, as he apparently played with true feelings and emotions - as is often seen in England. Because of his achievements and his appearance in this tournament, he was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year , Sportsman of the Year in Great Britain.

After his return from Italy Gascoigne played only a mediocre season with the "Spurs" and ended up in tenth place. However, this was outshone by winning the FA Cup in 1990/91 . In the semifinals, Hotspur defeated Arsenal FC and Gazza shone with a remarkable free-kick. In the final, Tottenham beat Nottingham Forest 2-1, winning their first title in seven years. However, the victory celebration took place without Gascoigne. Just a few minutes after the start of the game, he injured himself through a tough foul on Forest player Gary Charles . Gascoigne damaged the cruciate ligaments on his right knee and was sidelined for almost a year. Due to this, his planned move to Lazio Rome was postponed .

It is characteristic of Gascoigne's unsteady lifestyle that he delayed his own recovery when he was injured again in a nightclub while drunk. But in the summer of 1992 he finally moved to the Italian capital for £ 5.5 million .

1992–1998: Injury worries and return

The time in Rome was not too successful for Paul Gascoignes, because he was slowed down too much by injuries and therefore only managed 47 games and six goals in three years in the cup and league. That is why he left Italy in 1995 and joined the traditional Scottish club Glasgow Rangers . He regenerated and was able to build on his brilliant achievements from the early 1990s. In the last game of the 1995/96 season against FC Aberdeen Gascoigne managed a hat trick and the Rangers won the eighth championship in a row. In addition, Glasgow won the Scottish Cup and League Cup . Gazza was named Scottish Footballer of the Year .

With these achievements he made it back to the national team and took part in the 1996 European Football Championship in his home country of England. He was again one of the defining players and also scored one of the most remarkable goals of the tournament: In the prestigious game against arch-rivals Scotland, he first lifted the ball with his left over Scottish defender Colin Hendry at full speed and then volleyed it with him from the air to be placed on the right in the gate. Nevertheless, this time too - as in 1990 - it was not enough for Gascoigne and England, because in the semifinals the team failed again on penalties to Germany . Gascoigne even had the opportunity to secure victory for his team with a golden goal in extra time . But he missed a cross by just a few centimeters.

After the European Championship, Gascoigne's soaring did not last very long. Once again, the northern English shook the public when he beat his wife Sheryl to hospital. Various women's associations then demanded that he be disregarded for the following international match - but without success, because Gazza was allowed to play.

Shortly thereafter, the " enfant terrible " was injured again and was only able to return to the Rangers team in 1997. This was followed by the successful defense of the championship (1997) and another league cup (1998). Nevertheless, the Rangers wanted to give Gascoigne to another club because they were no longer satisfied with his performance and, above all, his behavior. At first it looked like he was going to join Crystal Palace , but instead Gascoigne decided to join Middlesbrough FC (who was coached by his friend Bryan Robson ) and headed back to England for £ 3.4m.

However, he had already passed the zenith of his career and could no longer (as before) compensate for his misconduct outside of sport with his good performances. So he was removed from the English squad eight days before the start of the 1998 World Cup by then national coach Glenn Hoddle . For Gazza this was a bitter disappointment and because of his anger over Hoddle's decision he is said to have demolished his hotel room in the English training camp.

1998–2002: The last appearances in the Premier League

After the World Cup, Gascoigne found it difficult to regain a foothold. First his wife divorced him , then a good friend of his collapsed dead after a joint “pub crawl” with Gascoigne. In October 1998, he broke down crying and was heavily drunk and then went into alcohol withdrawal. He left it after only a few weeks.

Gascoigne stayed in Middlesbrough for two years. The team peppered with national players (including Christian Ziege , Gary Pallister or Paul Ince ) only achieved placements in the middle of the table. Even he could not convince himself and was noticed by alcohol and drug problems. At the end of the 1999/2000 season Bryan Robson decided to dissolve Gascoignes ongoing contract and give up the player.

Gascoigne struck gold while looking for a new club at Everton , where his former Rangers boss and friend Walter Smith took him on. He initially played quite successfully until he suffered another injury and he had to end the season prematurely. Shortly afterwards his alcohol addiction took over again; at the end of the season he went to an alcohol rehab clinic one more time.

Gascoigne was able to partially fight his way back into the team in the following season (he had some appearances as a substitute); when the management of the club changed and he feared for his place in the team, he decided to make another change. His new club was the lower class Burnley FC ; there he saw the rest of the 2001/02 season the chance of more playing time and a regular place. At the end of the season he ended his engagement there.

2002 until today: soccer globetrotter and health collapse

At first it looked like Gascoigne should find a new sporting home in the USA . However, his move to DC United failed at the last moment - probably because the MLS officials were deterred by Gazza's reputation. This was followed by a series of speculations about his next job (among other things, he was associated with clubs in Australia ). Ultimately, he continued his career with the Chinese club Gansu Tianma in January 2003 .

Shortly thereafter, the league was interrupted by the outbreak of the SARS virus and Gascoigne was unemployed again. A little later, depression forced him to return to the clinic. New speculation ensued as to where Gascoigne might sign a deal next. He was z. B. associated with Wolverhampton Wanderers or Sheffield Wednesday , but his physical condition prevented a job.

In July 2004, Gascoigne's life seemed to hang by a thin thread. He was hospitalized with a stomach ulcer and was in a life-threatening condition. He had recently been treated for food poisoning. A few months later - in December 2004 - the now 37-year-old had to go to the clinic because of a dangerous pneumonia. This meant the temporary low point in the life of the Englishman.

In the meantime he worked from July to October 2004 as a player - coach for the fourth-rate club Boston United ; he left the club to get his coaching license. In October 2005 he became a coach at the English sixth division club Kettering Town . Six weeks later he had to end his engagement. The reason given was allegedly that he repeatedly appeared drunk for training.

At a party on May 27, 2007 on the occasion of his 40th birthday, Gascoigne complained of severe abdominal pain. In fact, it was a ruptured stomach ulcer . According to the doctors, only an emergency operation in Newcastle saved the Englishman's life.

In February 2008, Gascoigne was arrested by police at a Gateshead hotel under the Mental Health Act and arrested in Newcastle ; just three months later he was again admitted to a psychiatric clinic. In early 2013, he appeared publicly at a charity event; this made his poor health visible. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that Gascoigne was in an intensive care unit after violently reacting to withdrawal measures. In January 2014, Gascoigne went to rehab again. In December 2015, he suffered another severe relapse.

In August 2013, Gascoigne was fined for assaulting a security guard. In November 2018, he was charged again with allegedly touching a woman on a train ride.

Others

Gazza has found its place in the hearts of the fans mainly because of his (sometimes rough) jokes. A small excerpt:

  • During his time at Newcastle he booked several visits to the solarium for his teammate Tony Cunningham - knowing full well that his skin color is black.
  • Another teammate Gary Mabbutt (then captain of Tottenham Hotspur) pulled the pants down in the middle of the field as he was holding up a trophy.
  • After the English national coach Bobby Robson had described him as “ daft as a brush ” (German: “dumb as a brush”), Gascoigne appeared the next morning with a brush that he had tucked into his socks.
  • In a Premier League match, Gascoigne showed the referee the yellow card after it fell from his pocket onto the grass. However, the referee had little sense of humor and also showed Gazza yellow.
  • When Gennaro Gattuso did his first training with the Glasgow Rangers at 19 and wanted to put on his clothes after showering, he discovered human excrement in his underpants. A special "welcome gift" from Gazza .
  • He burped into the microphone during a television interview with an Italian reporter.

Gazza was in 1990 as a member of the band Englandneworder with the title "World In Motion" , which was recorded on the occasion of the Soccer World Cup in Italy , number 1 in the UK charts. In addition to him, other national players such as B. Chris Waddle or Steve McMahon can be heard in the song.

In January 2009, Gascoigne's seven-year-old nephew Cameron Gascoigne made headlines when he was signed by Gazza's ex-club Newcastle United. According to the Daily Star newspaper, the decisive factor was a junior game in which Cameron scored 22 goals in 30 minutes for his club Rutherford Swifts.

On June 15, 2015, the film "Gascoigne" about the life of the footballer was released.
