history

League play has been played in Scotland since 1890. Initially, the Scottish Football League (SFL) consisted of one, from 1894 of two seasons (" Division One " and " Division Two "). For the 1975/76 season, the professional league system was restructured under the umbrella of the SFL. The ten best of the former 18 first division clubs formed the new "Premier Division" and the remaining 28 professional teams were divided into the now second-class First Division and a new third division, which was called the Second Division . For the 1994/95 season a fourth class (" Third Division ") was added and ten teams played at all levels at this time.

In 1998, the Premier Division decided to split off from the Scottish Football League and create the Scottish Premier League .
