The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 46th time in 1938/39 and at the same time the last full season before the outbreak of World War II , which resulted in an interruption of the official game operations until the resumption in the 1946/47 season . It was also the 49th edition of the top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 13, 1938 and ended on April 29, 1939. In the 1938/39 season, 20 clubs competed against each other in a total of 38 game days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship won for the 24th time in their club history, the Glasgow Rangers . The top scorer with 35 goals was Alex Venters of the Glasgow Rangers.
