The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 62nd time in 1961/62 . It was also the 65th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 23, 1961 and ended on April 28, 1962. In the 1961/62 season, 18 clubs competed against each other in a total of 34 match days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal quotient counted .
The championship won for the first and so far only time in the club's history of Dundee FC . The Dees qualified as champions for the following European Cup season-1962/63 . Third, fourth and eighth placed Celtic Glasgow , Dunfermline Athletic and Hibernian Edinburgh qualified for the Exhibition Cities Cup . As cup winners , the Glasgow Rangers qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The FC St. Johnstone and Stirling Albion climbed into the Division Two from. The top scorer was Alan Gilzean of FC Dundee with 24 goals .
