The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the 13th time in 1987/88 . It was also the 91st edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1987/88 season, 12 clubs competed against each other in a total of 44 days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 35th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The Bhoys qualified as champions for the following European Cup of National Champions season 1988/89 . As a defeated cup finalist , Dundee United qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Second, third and fourth placed Heart of Midlothian , Glasgow Rangers and FC Aberdeen qualified for the UEFA Cup .
The Falkirk FC , Dunfermline Athletic and Greenock Morton got into the end of the season First Division from. With 33 goals, Dundee FC's Tommy Coyne was the top scorer.
