The Scottish Football League Division One was held for the 73rd time in 1972/73 . It was also the 76th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on September 2, 1972 and ended on April 28, 1973. In the 1972/73 season, 18 clubs competed against each other in a total of 34 game days. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 28th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The Bhoys qualified as champions for the following European Cup season-1973/74 . The league cup winner Hibernian Edinburgh , as well as fourth and fifth placed FC Aberdeen and FC Dundee qualified for the UEFA Cup . As cup winners , the Glasgow Rangers qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The Kilmarnock FC and Airdrieonians FC went into the Division Two from. The top scorer was Alan Gordon of Hibernian Edinburgh with 27 goals .
