The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the sixth time in 1980/81 . It was also the 84th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1980/81 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 32nd time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . Celtic thus qualified as champion for the following European Cup of the 1981/82 season . Runner-up and fifth place, Aberdeen FC and Dundee United qualified for the UEFA Cup . As cup winners , the Glasgow Rangers qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup .
