The Scottish Football League Division One was played for the 72nd time in 1971/72 . It was also the 75th edition of the highest soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on September 4, 1971 and ended on May 1, 1972. In the 1971/72 season, 18 clubs competed against each other in a total of 34 matchdays. Each team played once at home and away against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 27th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The Bhoys qualified as champions for the following European Cup season-1972/73 . The runner-up, FC Aberdeen , as well as the league cup winner Partick Thistle qualified for the UEFA Cup . As a defeated cup finalist , Hibernian Edinburgh qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The FC Clyde and Dunfermline Athletic promoted to the Division Two from. The top scorer was Joe Harper of Aberdeen FC with 33 goals .
