The Texaco Cup was played for the third time in 1972/73 . The American mineral oil company Texaco acted as sponsor and namesake of the tournament . The tournament for football club teams from England and Scotland was played among a total of 16 participants. Of these, 9 clubs were subordinate to the English and seven to the Scottish association . It began on September 12, 1972 and ended with the final second leg on May 7, 1973 at Carrow Road in Norwich . In the final, the two English clubs Ipswich Town and Norwich City met . Ipswich won the final 4-2 on a return leg.
