Artistic creation

Wolfgang Kohl belonged to a group of students in Professor Alfonso Hüppi's class at the Düsseldorf Art Academy who dealt with the subject of figurative painting and sculpture in the 1970s. They did so despite the disdain for realistic art that was prevalent at the time as a result of the abuse of figurative art by two totalitarian regimes in Germany. Since the beginning of the seventies, the range of materials used and their significance have also been redefined in sculpture. The material wood, freed from historical ballast and unencumbered by pathos and claim to immortality, proved to be a suitable material to implement your ideas in terms of content and form. Therefore, different types of wood are combined with other materials and often colored. In addition to wooden sculptures of objects, the portrayal of people soon became the dominant theme in Kohl's artistic focus. Personal experiences and observations often served as suggestions. Kohl sees his sculptures in the tradition of the sculptors Christoph Voll (1897–1939), Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964) and Karl Röhrig (1886–1972), among others . In addition, sculptures are created that deal with the aesthetics of the material and the phenomena of perception. In 1989 he made a series of woodcuts that graphically implement the themes of the sculptures. Kohl's first work created for public space has stood before the Heinsberg District Court since 1994 .
