Alfonso Hüppi (born February 11, 1935 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a Swiss painter , graphic artist and sculptor . He lives in Baden-Baden and temporarily in Namibia .

family

Alfonso Hüppi's parents came from central Switzerland . After spending a few years in Freiburg im Breisgau, where Alfonso was born, they returned to their homeland. The father had been a Swiss Guard in Rome as a young man and therefore gave his son an Italian first name. Alfonso Hüppi was married to the artist Brigitta Hüppi-Weber. The children from the marriage are Johannes Hüppi and Thaddäus Hüppi .

life and work

Alfonso Hüppi trained as a silversmith in Lucerne from 1950 to 1954 and worked as a journeyman until 1954. From 1954 to 1958 he worked as a hammer worker in a hammer mill . Then he traveled to the Middle East from 1958 to 1959. Then in 1960 he studied sculpture at the Pforzheim School of Art and Crafts and at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg . There he took over a lectureship in calligraphy and design from 1961 to 1964 . From 1964 to 1968 he worked at the State Art Gallery in Baden-Baden . He then took on a professorship for painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1974 to 1999 .

With his class he went on study trips around the Mediterranean to the Middle East , Africa , Italy , Sicily , Tunisia , Egypt , Turkey , Kurdistan , Syria , Persia and Armenia . In 1998 he and Erwin Gebert founded the “ Museum im Busch ” in Etaneno, Namibia. Since then he has been director of the local museum and the artist program.

Alfonso Hüppi is a member of the German Association of Artists .
