biography

Stefan Ettlinger studied from 1980 to 1988 at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Alfonso Hüppi. He finished the academy in 1985 as a master class student. As a result, his first films were made. During this time he also staged performances, composed music and was a. a. Member of the AGZ ( Anarchist Rubber Cell ). Further members of the AGZ are Thorsten Ebeling, Heinz Hausmann , Bertram Jesdinsky , Otto Müller, Ulrich Sappok.

In 2008 he received a visiting professorship in painting at the College Of Fine Art at Kyung Hee University in Seoul , Korea. In the winter semester 2010/2011 he took on a substitute professorship (free graphics and painting, class Alexander Roob) at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. In 2012 he took part in a two-month stay in Chongqing , China as part of an artist exchange program run by the city of Düsseldorf. In 2013 he traveled again for several months to Chengdu (exchange program of the DCKD Düsseldorf) and Chongqing (China) to work artistically there. A large number of drawings were made on paper and hardboard.

Stefan Etllinger has been painting many pictures with egg tempera since the 1980s . They mostly show sketchy, figurative or objective events. The image space is perceived as a dynamic whole, in which various events from different periods of time can be combined with one another on one surface. In the presentation they appear interlocking and overlapping. His templates are mostly film stills , photographs and self-made sketches. He puts these together like a collage and painterly works on the diverging perspectives and juxtaposes them. The levels of action are separated from one another horizontally or vertically, but sometimes also placed in a common landscape context.

The content of the scene-like moments cannot be deciphered. They remain meaningless and have to be put together by the viewer to form narrative elements. Video clips, sound collages, performances and theatrical actions flow into his way of working, as do his films. This reflects u. a. among other things also his experiences with the Düsseldorf artist group Anarchist GummiZelle.
