The WP8 is an artists' association in Düsseldorf . It was founded on January 16, 1992 under the name “Friends and Sponsors of WP8 eV”, named after its address at Worringer Platz 8 in Düsseldorf.

history

WP8 was initiated as a non-profit off- space . At the beginning of the 1990s he owned the project space / association “Friesenwall 116a”, run by Michael Krome, Katharina Jacobsen and Andrea Wagener on Friesenwall in Cologne, as well as the temporary bar “EX-WM” in the atelier von Krawen und Braster in the former building of the Paul Kahle Pipeline Construction at Kölner Strasse 170 ahead. They were the conceptual basis. In addition, other artistic project rooms and clubs such as the “Elektro” and the “Blechkiste” in Berlin, as well as the lack of the Ratinger Hof after its demolition, were the impetus for the establishment of WP8. The founding members were: Fenja Braster, Claus Föttinger , Michael Krome, Gertrud Peters, Christina Assmann, Hendrik Krawen , Andreas Gursky and Ulrich Sappok. For the renovation of the dilapidated former pub “Zum Adam”, most recently “Hard Rock Café” at Kölner Straße 73, located directly on Worringer Platz in the immediate vicinity of Düsseldorf Central Station, as well as for the furnishings and the WP8 program, an art auction was held in the gallery Tabea Langenkamp organized. Parts of the room were designed by Hendrik Krawen, the bar by architect Marco Glashagen, and the cellar disco by Claus Föttinger. A computer workstation for artistic projects was set up.

One of the first events was The Thing's “Wochenschau” . Curated on site by Sabine B. Vogel , as a pilot project and sponsored by Deutsche Telekom , project rooms from Cologne to New York were networked to enable real-time communication / video telephony as early as 1992 before the internet spread between artists in different cities for a week. Film programs from Charles Paul Wilp to Kenneth Anger were organized. From 1993 to 2000, Heinz Hausmann played a key role in the WP8 program. Several other projects, such as the EGO Club and the hobbypopMusem, have arisen in the immediate vicinity of WP8.

idea

As an independent, self-managed place for artists and for artists who come from the Düsseldorf Art Academy and its surroundings, artists' meetings and events organized by artists have taken place since then: the WM bar (for the football World Cup or European Championship), art exhibitions, concerts, Literature evenings, night clubbing and more. In addition to spontaneous events on site, there are also initiatives and collaborations on externally organized artist projects.
