Holger Bunk (born December 5, 1954 in Essen ) is a German painter.

Life

From 1974 to 1982 he studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (with Peter Kleemann and Alfonso Hüppi ), in 1978 he became a master student with Alfonso Hüppi in Düsseldorf. Since 1992 he has been a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and from 1997–2007 was a member of the “Art in Architecture” commission at the Stuttgart Regional Finance Directorate.

As early as the second half of the 1970s, Bunk made a conscious decision in favor of figurative painting in the context of an education at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf that was more oriented towards abstract tendencies and the exhibition business dominated by conceptual art at the time. Although at the same time as the "New Wild" groups emerging in the Rhineland and Berlin, Bunk developed his pictures more independently and more as a single figure in response to (art) historical models or in enthusiasm for English and American Pop Art . He tries to counter the discrediting of realism and the abuse of figurative painting by the two different totalitarian systems of the 20th century in Germany with an individual, rather critical and ironic - melancholy position. The basis of his “pictorial inventions” (Dr. Friedrich Meschede) remains the very personal observation of the real - ironically also referred to as “proletarian mannerism” or “painting by the most western GDR painter” ( Kasper König ).

In addition to large-format painting (oil, acrylic paint), which is occasionally staged in the room, Bunk also develops his subject matter in a variety of drawings, watercolors and pastel pictures.

Holger Bunk had his first international successes with his occasionally controversial position at the two exhibitions "Hammer Exhibition" and "Hammer II" organized by the legendary Basel gallery owner Felix Handschin in 1979 and 1982, in which young artistic positions such as the Bunks alongside established artists such as Jean Tinguely , Bernhard Luginbühl , Ben Vautier , Alfonso Hüppi , Michael Buthe , Jürgen Klauke and others were shown. The exhibitions “from here”, organized in Düsseldorf in 1984 by Kasper König, Rafael Jablonka and Maja Oeri, and the XIIIeme Biennale de Paris in 1985 brought further fame.

Bunk has also been working in his studio in Amsterdam since 1988, and in 1992 he was offered a professorship at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Between 1992 and 1993 he created pictures in cooperation with his friend, painter Peter Mell. In the mid to late 1990s, Bunk's oeuvre returned to a more conscious engagement with the world of new media in the form of collages and picture series. Since around 2004/05 he has been creating paintings of overlapping image levels, murals and large formats.
