from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kunsthalle Göppingen is a municipal gallery that exhibits international modern and contemporary art in changing exhibitions in the Hohenstaufen town of Göppingen . Up to 15 exhibitions per year take place in three rooms on a total of 883 m² of exhibition space. From 2003 to 2005 the Kunsthalle Göppingen presented works from the Bönsch Art Foundation at Filseck Castle near Uhingen . Since 2007 the Kunsthalle Göppingen has been using the Schloss Filseck for changing exhibitions in cooperation with the Schloss Filseck Foundation of the Kreissparkasse Göppingen , and since 2017 these have been held in the newly expanded gallery in the east wing .

history

The building was built in 1965 as a workshop building for the trade school. The architectural feature of the former industrial building is the shed roof . The sheds give the room ideal northern light and give the exhibition hall a studio character. On the initiative of the Association for the Promotion of a Municipal Gallery e. V. (later Kunstverein Göppingen eV ), the City of Göppingen founded the City Gallery Göppingen in 1989 , and since 2000 the Kunsthalle Göppingen .

In the course of time, there were repeated expansions within the former school building. The exhibition room "C1" (English pronounced "see one") has existed since 1998, in which one work of art is exhibited. In a newly acquired and converted hall in the basement ("hall below", approx. 350 m²), an additional exhibition space for special projects and the collection of the Kunsthalle Göppingen was created in 2002. In 2011 the artist Klaus Heider bequeathed his work to the Kunsthalle Göppingen. For this donation, the “Salone” was created in the basement, a space for encounter and research with art. The art historian Melanie Ardjah has been the director of the Kunsthalle Göppingen since May 1, 2019 .

collection

The city of Göppingen has been collecting works of art since the 1950s. The Kunsthalle Göppingen took over this collection of around 700 works of art when it was built. Since then, the number of works of art has more than doubled through purchases, donations and permanent loans. The Kunsthalle Göppingen also manages half of the pictures of the Helmut Baumann Foundation . With the pictures of this foundation and the holdings of the Klaus Heider donation, the collection of the Kunsthalle Göppingen 2012 comprises over 3500 works of art. As of 2012, this collection will include an art library .

Exhibition program

The program is geared towards international contemporary art. In 1989 the exhibitions Günther Uecker , The 1980s and New York Graffiti made the start. In addition to solo exhibitions by important artists, there were themed exhibitions such as ZÜGE ZÜGE, Railways in Contemporary Art (1994), Pictures of the Real World in Real Time, On Kawara 1966-1994, American Photography 1966-1996 (1995), Video - ergo sum (2000 ), Im Bild (2004), Im Wort (2007) or Happy End (2010). In addition to contemporary art, the Kunsthalle Göppingen also showed exhibitions such as Max Ernst and Literature or Francisco de Goya , The entire graphic work . On the occasion of the Venice Biennale 2011, the Kunsthalle Göppingen realized its own project (Giovanni Rizzoli, Naughty Girl).

Museum education

Art education and museum education have a high priority in the work of the Kunsthalle Göppingen. The focus is on the originals and personal communication. Guided tours, artist talks, lectures with or without independent, creative implementation of what has been conveyed are offered. With up to 350 events per year, the Kunsthalle Göppingen is an important educational institution for the city and the region. In addition, innovative projects are developed. During the school makes museum - museum makes school project , an entire school explores the art gallery and becomes part of the exhibition. For this project, the Kunsthalle Göppingen won the prize of the MIXED UP competition for cooperation between culture and school in 2011 , organized by the Bundesvereinigung Kulturelle Kinder- und Jugendbildung e. V.
