Giulio Paolini

Giulio Paolini (born November 5, 1940 in Genoa ; lives in Turin and Paris ) is an Italian painter , sculptor , object and concept artist and an important representative of Arte Povera in Italy.

life and work

Giulio Paolini trained as a graphic designer until 1959 . After this time he began to work artistically with painting and collage to analyze his artistic means. At the same time he studied linguistic systems. His first documented work Disegno geometrico dates from 1960.

In 1964 his first solo exhibition took place in the Galleria La Salita in Rome. Since then, Giulio Paolini has been represented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 1967 Paolini took part in the first Arte Povera exhibition in the Galleria La Bertesca in Genoa.

Giulio Paolini focuses in his artistic work on the phenomenon of sight. He also examines topics such as space and time, the perspective, and cultural conditioning of the author and viewer. In 1965 he began to take up photography .

Since 1972, related groups of works have been created under the collective name " Idem ". In the 1970s, Paolini dealt with classical mythological symbolism and used photos and elements from classical sculptures. His aim was to question art, originality and reproduction. In 1972 he took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Individual Mythology Department with some of his works .

Since 1975 he has published philosophical and critical articles in various journals and as his own publications. In 1975, for example, Idem appeared with an introduction by Italo Calvino .

In addition to numerous other international exhibitions, Giulio Paolini was represented at the Venice Biennale in 1970, 1976, 1984, 1986, 1993 and 1997 and after 1972 three times in Kassel at a documenta : 1977 at Documenta 6 , 1982 at the Documenta 7 and 1992 represented at Documenta IX as an artist.

For the 2002/2003 season in the Vienna State Opera he designed a huge large picture (176 m²) as part of the “Iron Curtain” exhibition series conceived by museum in progress .

In 2019 the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein also included him in a retrospective on "Arte Povera."
