Life

Melhus grew up as the son of a German and a Norwegian in Swabia. He then received a DAAD scholarship at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles in 1997/98 and a studio scholarship from 1999 to 2001 as a prize from the Kunstverein Hannover. With a scholarship from the State of Lower Saxony, he took part in the renowned ISCP (International Studio and Curatorial Program) in New York in 2001/02. Melhus made commercials at the beginning of his career , but has been producing films, videos and installations in the experimental film and art context since 1986.

Melhus' works find their inspiration again and again in the tensions between freedom and violence or oppression. He often reflects the impact and influence of the mass media and consistently uses found footage material from various media channels such as classic films, YouTube videos or talk shows. With stylistic devices such as ironic-grotesque exaggeration or exaggeration, he questions stereotypical ideas, figures, patterns of behavior and perception. He embodies the protagonists in his works from humans to animals, regardless of gender and age. However, his own voice can never be heard, instead varying, repetitive voice quotations. With the breaking of the rigid relationships between media and recipients, Melhus with its “wonderful, almost magical world” opens up the view for the essential elements of human actions and interactions.

"Bjørn Melhus is one of the most famous German short filmmakers and media artists and at the same time one of the few whose work has received international attention and recognition both at short film festivals and in the art scene."
