history

Photo print based on a group picture by Ernst August Fischer , 1903
On March 3, 1832, the "Art Association for the Kingdom of Hanover " was founded. The founders were Bernhard Hausmann , a Hanoverian citizen and court clerk of the Hanoverian viceroy, and Johann Hermann Detmold .
Hausmann founded the association among bourgeois art lovers "in the locale of the Hausmann painting gallery". The purpose was to "enliven and spread the sense of the fine arts that happily developed in our country". Hausmann had already made his own collection available to the aristocratic and bourgeois public in his private rooms in 1818.
Today the association has 1200 members.
Structure of the art association
As a registered association, the art association makes decisions in general meetings, through the board of directors and the advisory board. The general assembly elects the members of the board of directors and the advisory board and decides on the principles for the distribution of annual expenses and the contribution. The board of directors has the task of leading the work of the association and is advised by the advisory board. The advisory board consists of 15 people, at least five of whom should be visual artists. The advisory board advises the directors on artistic issues and is heard before important decisions by the board of directors. The election takes place for three years, whereby the statutes revised in 1973 stipulate that five members are elected every year with the special feature that re-election is possible, but a pause of one year is required after a term of office has expired.
Chairperson
Around 1868 Carl Rümpler was chairman of the art association. Martin Neuffer was chairman of the art association during his tenure as city director. He was followed by the Hanover City Councilor for Culture, Heinz Lauenroth, whose successor was Karl-Ernst Bungenstab not only in the role of City Councilor for Culture, but also as chairman of the art association (1975 to 1991). Ellen Lorenz has chaired the art association since 1991; she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2018.
Directors
According to the Articles of Association of the Kunstverein, the board of directors can appoint a director and other employees to "manage the business and organize the association's events".

Prize of the art association
The "Prize of the Art Association" has been awarded every two years since 1983. Until 2009, the award winners were two artists from Lower Saxony and two from Bremen. They received two-year work grants with living and studio space in a studio house called "Villa Minimo" based on the Villa Massimo in Rome. The scholarship concludes with an exhibition on the premises of the Kunstverein and, if possible, a catalog. Since 2010, the Kunstverein's award has been split into three different grants with the same framework conditions. There is a scholarship, a young talent scholarship and a national young talent scholarship for artists.
