Made in Germany (exhibition)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Made in Germany is the name of an overview show that has been taking place in Hanover since 2007 on the contemporary art of German and foreign artists who live and work in Germany. The Hanoverian exhibition houses Sprengel Museum Hannover , Kestnergesellschaft and Kunstverein Hannover came together for the first time for this exhibition and designed the show together.

In 2012 the exhibition was held again under the title “Made in Germany Zwei” with the subtitle International Art from Germany. The third edition of “Made in Germany” from June 3 to September 3, 2017 focuses on the production conditions of art in Germany and the question of how geographical, political and institutional structures as well as new technologies create decisive conditions for the production of art. By concentrating on the current production conditions, she asks to what extent artistic production is redefined.

The exhibitions took place or are taking place parallel to the respective documenta in Kassel.

2007

In 2007 the Kestnergesellschaft, the Kunstverein Hannover and the Sprengel Museum Hannover joined forces for the first time in order to give an insight into the development of the current international art scene in Germany in a joint exhibition. The exhibition took place from May 25 to August 26, 2007, in which over 80 works by 52 international artists living and working in Germany were presented. The exhibition extended over the three houses and took up the respective spatial situations and conditions. A total of 60,000 interested people visited this first exhibition, which was under the patronage of Federal President Horst Köhler .

The exhibition "Made in Germany Zwei" followed five years later and also showed contemporary art by international artists who live and work in Germany. A total of 44 positions were selected by a team of curators from the three exhibition houses. The exhibition began on May 17 and ended on August 19, 2012. Made in Germany Zwei was under the patronage of Federal President Joachim Gauck . Unlike in 2007, the exhibition was structured according to key themes. Based on the question of which overarching tendencies and artistic questions can be observed, six main themes were defined that have increasingly played a role in the work of contemporary art in recent years: "Yesterday in today", (social, virtual, institutional) " Spaces ”, the“ supersensible ”, the limits and extensions of the medium (“ medium as material ”),“ narrativity ”and“ networking ”are the focus of the show as viewing options. Many of the participating artists developed new works for the show. In 2012 almost 60,000 visitors visited the exhibition, so the organizers built on the success of the first edition from 2007.

From June 3 to September 3, 2017 there will be a third exhibition entitled "Production. Made in Germany Three". In the five years since the last exhibition, the post-digital generation has grown up and new networks, apps and DIY instructions have permeated art. In an art landscape with an internationally unique density of institutions (art academies and art colleges, art associations and museums), the German scene is also the production site for this latest art.

Three central aspects are in the foreground of the exhibition and the artists: firstly, space in the sense of place of production, location and surroundings; second, time in terms of work process, narration and speed; third, production structure in terms of cooperation and network. Ephemeral art forms and space-related installations are booming, and artists are creating blogs, offspaces and free space for all kinds of activities. The expansion of their global mobility, membership of different artist groups and participation in a demanding art market are further aspects of a much accelerated creation. These developments pose virulent questions: What role does it play in contemporary art production to make the context of its creation visible? To what extent have the geographical coordinates of production differentiated in the context of digital communication and virtual networking? How is the process of collaboration manifested within Germany as a production location? How does the examination of the specific exhibition location take place? When does the exhibition site become the production site?

By inviting groups of artists and artists who reflect on the production of their art in particular, such as through site- or media-specific work, the exhibition in the three houses in 2017 shows visitors the contemporary situation of art in Germany based on selected positions.

The increasing "dissolution of boundaries" in the visual arts has also caused the three institutions Kestnergesellschaft, Kunstverein Hannover and the Sprengel Museum Hannover to seek further cultural partners in Hannover for the first time. The Schauspiel Hannover , the Festival Theaterformen and the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen are participating as institutions in 2017 to supplement the question of production and location with further interdisciplinary projects and to emphasize the changing production conditions of theater and performance.
