Tobias Zielony (* 1973 in Wuppertal ) is a German artist , photographer and filmmaker . He lives and works in Berlin .

Life

Zielony studied documentary photography at the University of Wales, Newport in Great Britain from 1998 to 2001 . He completed his studies with the photo series Curfew (2001), which shows young people in Bristol . In 2001 he moved to the Leipzig University of Graphics and Book Art and became a master student of Timm Rautert . It was there that he created his book project Behind the Block , for which he observed young people in four European cities and received the prize from the Leipzig Institute for Book Art in 2002 .

Already in Newport he began to document the youthful subculture and looked for his motifs in empty, nocturnal parking garages. “In Newport, I felt like all the kids were wearing these jogging suits. That was around 1999. ”He worked with single images and sequences of color documentation photos. He continued his observations in other countries and places, including France, Canada, the USA and Italy. The photo cycle Manitoba was created in the capital of the state of Winnipeg and shows members of a gang of indigenous youth.

In Marseille he was interested in young people whose parents emigrated to France from the Comoros archipelago in south-east Africa . In Naples he photographed young people from the northern parts of the city, which are considered the strongholds of the Camorra . In his photo series and films he builds up a close relationship of trust with the young people and thus gets an insight into the hidden rituals and the latently open violence within the group. But he is "[...] less interested in documenting living conditions than in depicting the appearance of young people in public space." In his film The Deboard , 2008, also made in Winnipeg, Zielony shows members of youth gangs and describes the ritual that dropouts face have to undergo. Tobias Zielony was a lecturer at the Chair for Artistic Photography at the Art Academy for Media Cologne (KHM) in the winter semester 2009/10 . He has received numerous grants and awards. In 2015, Zielony exhibited together with Olaf Nicolai , Hito Steyerl and Jasmina Metwaly / Philip Rizk in the German Pavilion of the Biennale di Venezia (curator Florian Ebner ).
