The Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo or MAXXI , (German: "National Museum of the Arts of the XXIth Century") is a museum for contemporary art in Rome .
history
In 1998, the Italian Ministry of Culture decided to build a national museum for contemporary art in Rome, as Rome was one of the few European capitals without its own museum for modern art. The architect Zaha Hadid emerged from the competition. An old barracks area from the late 19th century in the Flaminio district was chosen as the location for the new museum. The construction costs amounted to 150 million euros. The new museum was supported by a specially established state foundation ( Fondazione Maxxi ); The Italian architect Pio Baldi was president of the foundation until 2012 .
The museum was opened in November 2009 with a performance by the choreographer Sasha Waltz and her dance company and has been in official use since the end of May 2010. Margherita Guccione and Anna Mattirolo became the first directors.
architecture
The architect Zaha Hadid fitted the building into the existing structures of the district. The museum has an L-shaped basic shape and consists of several long exposed concrete building parts that seem to flow into one another, above and below one another. Inside, the construction is dominated by generous galleries, slopes, ramps and curves, artificial light and natural light from large glass fronts illuminate the galleries, halls and cabinets. The individual floors are connected to each other by free-floating black stairs. The building has an area of 29,000 m².
concept
The museum sees itself as a creative space and laboratory for contemporary art. In addition to the MAXXI Art , which is entirely dedicated to art, it also houses the MAXXI Architettura , which deals with architecture. It is the first architecture museum in Italy. In addition to exhibitions, the program also includes workshops, conferences, lectures and performances. The museum also offers a wide range of educational programs. In addition to contemporary works of art, the museum's collection also includes architectural photographs, architectural designs and an archive of architectural history.
In addition to the exhibition rooms, the museum has an auditorium, a research center with a library and archive, as well as a bookstore, a cafeteria and a restaurant with a bar.
