Patrik Schumacher
Patrik S. Schumacher (born August 30, 1961 in Bonn ) is a German architect and university professor , he is considered a theoretical thought leader in architecture and urban planning ( parametrism ).
Schumacher worked with Zaha Hadid from 1988 to 2016 , and has been a partner in Zaha Hadid Architects since 2002 . In 2006 he was founding director of the AA Design Research Lab (AADRL) .
Life

From 1980, Patrik Schumacher studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Bonn and at the London South Bank University , later architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart , where he graduated in 1990 with a degree in engineering . In 1999 he received his doctorate in philosophy at the Institute for Cultural Studies at the University of Klagenfurt .
During his studies in London, he did an internship with Zaha Hadid in 1983 after hearing about her spectacular design for an amusement and recreation park, The Peak Leisure Club, on a mountainside in Hong Kong . From 1988 on he worked regularly in her architecture office and became her most important employee. In a Hadid portrait on the BBC , she said to Schumacher that he was an "enormous support" and an "unbelievable asset" for her.
From 1992 onwards, Schumacher held several teaching positions and visiting professorships at architecture faculties in Great Britain, continental Europe and the USA. Together with Brett Steele, he founded the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London in 1996 and is one of its co-directors to this day. Since 2004 he has been a professor at the chair for experimental architecture at the institute for experimental architecture.hochbau at the University of Innsbruck .
He was involved in the planning of many buildings at Zaha Hadid Architects , including MAXXI - Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, the central building of the BMW plant in Leipzig , the opera house in Guangzhou and the South Korean design museum Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). In addition to his architectural activities, he is currently in charge of planning two districts in Istanbul (Kartal Pendik ) and Singapore (Singapore One North).
Schumacher became a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1996 and a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts , section architecture.
Patrik Schumacher has been married to the Korean architect Eunsil Yang since 2016.
Parametrism
Schumacher writes numerous publications and gives public lectures worldwide on the subject of parametrism. He first presented this concept to the public in 2009 in an essay. The term parametrism was coined by him and means the application of natural construction principles in architecture and urban planning. As with organic architecture , natural forms are the beginning or the goal of design - with the difference, however, that computers today enable much more complex and finely coordinated forms to be created. Between 2010 and 2012 he published his two-volume magnum opus on The Autopoiesis of Architecture . In his central thesis, he states that architecture is an autonomous network of communications and thus an autopoietic system . In a lecture on parametrism, he distinguished six principles of design for better orientation.
Parametric principles:
Negative principles (taboos) | Positive principles (dogmas) |
- no strict forms (no platonic solids , cylinders) | - All shapes are soft (malleable). |
- not just repetition | - All systems are differentiated. |
- no collage of isolated, unconnected elements ( cacophony ) | - All systems correlate with one another. |
The main model for him is the design in nature. But today the challenge of this complexity can only be mastered with the help of graphics programs ("tools"). Everything that can be designed, from everyday objects and furnishings to house design and urban planning, can now be differentiated and integrated into one another at the same time. Therefore, parametrism also has the potential to become a universal theory of architecture. An interview with the weekly newspaper “Die ZEIT”, in which Schumacher represented neoliberal positions, met with considerable criticism.
