Marion Ermer Foundation
In the course of the reunification of Germany in 1989, Marion Ermer (* 1953 in Munich) received a large fortune, mainly through the restitution of real estate. In 1992 she founded the "Marion Ermer Foundation" as the first private cultural foundation in the new federal states . In 1993 the founder was honored with the Maecenas honor for her commitment . The laudator was Lothar Späth . Due to an illness, Marion Ermer is largely blind today.
Originally, a foundation volume of 10 million DM was planned, of which only 6 million DM were initially made available. Due to the complete loss of the property, the remaining sum could no longer be raised.
The Marion Ermer Foundation promotes art and culture in the new federal states , with a special focus on Saxony and Thuringia . It primarily focuses on promoting young artists. Social cultural projects were also supported, such as B. “Inner things brought to light” (exhibition with pictures of the mentally handicapped), the theater project “Urban Shots” and the exhibition “Aufriss Kunst” as well as the Kinderstudio Jena e. V.
One of the main tasks of the foundation today is awarding the Marion Ermer Prize. Due to fluctuations in the interest income that arises from the investment of the foundation's assets, the prize is not awarded every year.
