Ellen Blumenstein (* 1976 in Kassel ) is a German author and curator who lives in Berlin and Hamburg .

Life

Blumenstein studied literature, music and media studies and has been working internationally in the field of contemporary art for over 15 years.

The focus of her curatorial and journalistic practice is on the preservation of artistic freedom on the one hand, and on addressing new visitor groups on the other. She sees mediation as an integral part of her curatorial work.

Between 2013 and 2016 she was chief curator of the KW Institute for Contemporary Art . She conceived the institution as a place of production, collaboration and encounter with and through the visual arts and established numerous collaborations on a local and international level.

Blumenstein worked for KW from 1998 to 2005, where she curated the exhibition On the Presentation of Terror: The RAF Exhibition (with Klaus Biesenbach and Felix Ensslin , 2005).

As an expert on the framework conditions and the potential of cultural production today, she regularly advises foundations, political institutions and teaches at art colleges in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Germany. She is committed to improving the training of young artists and curators, is a member of numerous juries and gives international lectures.

Blumenstein was a member of the curatorial collective THE OFFICE and is the founder of Salon Populaire , an event location on the border between artistic production and institutional representation (Berlin, 2010–12). Together with Florian Wüst, she founded the cultural-political initiative Have and Need.

As a curator, she has been responsible for the artistic support of urban development in Hamburg's HafenCity since 2017.
