Channa Horwitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Channa Horwitz (born May 21, 1932 in Boyle Heights , Los Angeles , California as Channa Helene Shapiro ; † April 29, 2013 in Santa Monica , California) was an American conceptual artist . Her work was mostly based on notations with which she described complex systems.

life and work

Channa Horwitz has been working with numbers, rhythms, movements and the possibilities of visualizing these structures since the early sixties. Her drawings are often diagrams that record time and movement and can be read like a form of musical score. In some cases, these serve as instructions for performances and musical experiments.

“With the help of deductive logic, I developed a visual philosophy. Because I felt the need to control time and compose, just as I had previously controlled and composed two-dimensional drawings and paintings. I chose a diagram as the basis for the visual description of time. I assigned values to the diagram: One inch stands for one pulse in time. Using this diagram, I created compositions that visually represented rhythm. "

Channa Horwitz's works are reminiscent of the work of Hanne Darboven , which developed it almost at the same time in New York , with the attempt to fix time and its own inherent logic, which always takes the number eight as a starting point .

Channa Horwitz lived and worked in Los Angeles.
