Maecenas honor
The Maecenas honor is an award given by the Working Group of Independent Cultural Institutes eV (AsKI) since 1989. Up until 2007, every two years, since 2009 annually since 2009, personalities who have made a special contribution to art and culture in Germany were honored. The selection is made by an independent jury.
With the Maecenas honor, the AsKI wants to draw attention to the importance of private cultural funding, convey its work to the public and encourage new patronage. The Maecenas honor is not endowed and connected with the presentation of a work of art or a corresponding honorary gift, from 2003 with the bronze sculpture "Nike" by the sculptor Manfred Sihle-Wissel .
The name “Maecenas” is derived from the Roman Maecenas , who promoted poets like Virgil and Horace in the Augustan period.
