Udo Brandhorst

Udo Brandhorst (* 1939 probably in Cologne ) is a German art collector and patron . He is known for the permanent loan of his collection to Munich , for which the Brandhorst Museum was specially built.

Life

Brandhorst is considered to be very public shy, so little is known about his life. He was born in 1939, probably in Cologne. He was on the board of the RheinLand insurance group for a long time .

From the 1970s, he and his wife Anette Brandhorst (1936–1999) built one of the most important international art collections, which includes almost all of Picasso's book illustrations. In 1999 the couple decided to give their collection to Munich. In return, the Free State of Bavaria undertook to finance the construction of a museum in the Munich art area . The Brandhorst Museum was opened in May 2009.

Brandhorst was awarded the Maecenas honor of the working group of independent cultural institutes in the same year .
