history

The impetus to found a new insurance company came from the “Volkswirthschaftliche Verein für Rheinland”, which was launched in 1877 on the initiative of the Neuss businessman Joseph Broix (1837-1910). The aim of the association was to promote the “material interests of the Rhenish population”, setting out fields of activity in insurance, money business, public education and the agricultural sector. At that time Neuss had around 15,500 inhabitants and was determined by the insurance committee of the Volkswirthschaftliche Verein as the future location of the insurance company to be founded due to its geographical location and prosperous economy. On October 30, 1878, Brandenberg's notary from Neuss approved the company's statutes; afterwards the members of the Volkswirthschaftliche Verein were given the privilege to subscribe for shares. At the constituent general assembly of the "Rheinland" the 184 shareholders present elected the first supervisory board, as its chairman Peter Joseph Roeckerath from Cologne was appointed.

With a telegraphic message from the Royal Government of Düsseldorf on February 9, 1880, the “Feuerversicherungs-Gesellschaft Rheinland Aktiengesellschaft” was officially licensed. The business was opened on April 2, 1880 with 108 agencies in the Düsseldorf administrative region and 49 in the Aachen administrative region. The director of the company was the businessman Franz Werhahn (1850–1925) from Neuss, who, together with Joseph Broix as an authorized representative of the supervisory board, forms the first board of the “Rheinland”.

In 1903, a plot of land was acquired on Marienkirchplatz in Neuss for a new administrative center to be built. Construction work began the following year; In 1906 the building was ready for occupancy. The building in the Wilhelmine style was designed by the Neuss architect Carl Schaumburg (1867-1940). Franz Werhahn, in turn, had a decisive influence on the environment around the Rheinlandhaus: for example, he donated the honorary gift for the construction of the "Marienborn", which was intended on the occasion of his silver jubilee as director; He had already been involved in the founding process of the new parish of St. Marien .

The global economic crisis gave the ambitions to form a group a setback. In the years of National Socialism, the regime-critical owners / board members of the "Rhineland" were subject to closer scrutiny. According to a company chronicle published in 2005, the extent to which this fact impaired the company's business success “cannot be said with certainty”.

During the Second World War, the Rheinlandhaus and numerous buildings in the immediate vicinity - including the Marienkirche - were badly destroyed in bombing raids. After the end of the war, the workforce began to rebuild the company headquarters.

The development of business operations suffered a setback in the early 1960s, which was countered with modernization and rationalization measures. On July 1, 1964, the fire insurance company Rheinland Aktiengesellschaft changed its name to Rheinland Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft.

For the first few decades, “Rheinland” was exclusively active as a composite insurer. The entry into the life insurance business marked the purchase of the share capital in Bonner Lebensversicherung in 1971. With the acquisition of a majority stake in Ontos Restschuld-Lebensversicherungs AG based in Cologne by RheinLand Versicherungs AG in 1979, the sale of residual debt insurance began.

Since 1993, the companies of the RheinLand Insurance Group have been controlled by RheinLand Holding AG, which is not itself active in the insurance business. The development towards a modern insurance group was followed in the second half of the 1990s by the establishment of a new group administration at Neusser Hafen.

After the turn of the millennium, Credit Life International NV (2002), the Netherlands, and the associated takeover of the residual debt business by the new company and the establishment of the broker insurer Rhion (2005) were founded. In 2013 there was a strategic realignment with the reduction of the business model to three brands and sales. In 2018, RH Digital Company GmbH, a corporate startup, was founded to promote the development of digital innovations for the RheinLand Group.

The commitment at the Neuss location and in the region focuses on supporting culture and customs above all on sport. The RheinLand Group is the main sponsor of the Rhineland Olympic Training Center in Cologne and co-initiator of the partners for sport and education that have been promoting young athletes and competitive sports in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss since 2013 .

Today's RheinLand Versicherungs AG was created in the course of the founding of RheinLand Holding AG in 1993. The companies of the RheinLand Insurance Group are controlled through it.

RheinLand Versicherungs AG has had a branch in Amsterdam since 2013 and a branch in Milan since 2017.
