Christian Dräger (born July 13, 1934 in Berlin ) is a German entrepreneur , art collector and patron .

Life

Christian Dräger was born as the son of the Lübeck entrepreneur Heinrich Dräger in Berlin, where he first grew up and attended school. Later he lived in the country in Kükels near Bad Segeberg. He interrupted his school education for an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic in Schwenningen, where he also passed his Abitur. The later SPD federal politician Erhard Eppler was one of his teachers at this last school . Dräger studied business administration and economic history in Vienna and Munich , where he did his doctorate on 'The appropriate imputed profit in public contracts'. In 1961 he joined the family-owned Drägerwerk in Lübeck as head of the business administration department . In 1970 he became a member of the board, in 1984 he took over from his father, Dr. Heinrich Dräger chaired the board. With the generation change in the Dräger family, he first joined the company's supervisory board.

As an art collector, Christian Dräger has specialized in drawings from the Goethe era and German Romanticism. He transferred parts of this collection to the Lübeck Museum Behnhaus , which in Lübeck represents the art of the 18th and 19th centuries and has been sponsored by the Dräger family for decades. In addition to the Behnhaus, Dräger also supports the Lübeck Theater and the manuscript department of the city ​​library, as well as their holdings of incunabula . The Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities awarded him their medal in 2007 . In addition, Dräger is a member of the board of trustees of the International Martin Luther Foundation . 2013 was awarded the Dräger annually by an independent working group Cultural Institutes eV (AsKI) awarded Maecenas ceremony . This honors his exemplary services to the promotion of cultural life in Germany and the Hanseatic city of Lübeck .

On August 30, 2014 he received the Bene Merenti commemorative coin , the highest award of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck . This was the 56th award and the tenth since 1949.

On March 19, 2019, he was awarded the James Simon Prize .

Christian Dräger has been married to Gertrud Bohner since 1962. You have 4 children. The eldest son, Stefan Dräger , is currently the family company's CEO.
