Udo van Meeteren
Udo van Meeteren (born May 26, 1926 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German entrepreneur and art patron.
biography
His parents were the banker and merchant Georg (1880–1945) and Olga van Meeteren (1896–1976), a born Weuste. In the summer of 1926 the family moved to Düsseldorf in the Hofgarten district at Goltsteinstrasse 9, where Udo van Meeteren grew up. After graduating from high school at the age of 17 at the Prinz-Georg-Straße (today the Max-Planck-Gymnasium ) he studied mechanical engineering and mining at the Technical University in Aachen in 1944 . The Second World War interrupted his further career. He served as a radio operator and was taken prisoner by the French, from which he did not return home until 1948. After internships in a major bank in Hamburg and in the United States, van Meeteren joined the Michel Group (today part of RAG Aktiengesellschaft ) in 1952 . There he was appointed to the board of the lignite power plant Neurath AG in 1956 with the votes of the workforce . Further leading positions in the coal and steel industry followed . From 1959 to 1980 he was a limited partner in the Trinkaus & Burkhardt bank .
Cultural engagement
In 1980, on the 100th birthday of his father, he founded the non-profit foundation van Meeteren , which supports cultural goals with endowment assets of around 45 million euros. In 2013 he made the house of the University of Düsseldorf possible with further cash and non-cash benefits. In 2016 he funded the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf with two million euros for the establishment of the new master’s degree in art education and cultural management for the 2016/2017 winter semester.
