In 1948, representatives of important foundations founded the Working Group of German Charitable, Educational and Cultural Foundations. The Working Group of German Foundations developed from it. The association has had its current name since 1990.

In January 2018, the federal association started its new and revised foundation search on www.stiftungssuche.de. The Directory of German Foundations is now completely online and available as a free Foundation Search Basic and as a chargeable Foundation Search Plus by subscription with more comprehensive information. The Federal Association of German Foundations has published the directory since 1991. It is considered the most extensive German foundation register and appeared in its 9th updated edition in 2017 with around 26,000 entries.

organization structure

The association has over 4,500 members in 2020 and is the largest and oldest foundation association in Europe. More than 8000 foundations are members of the association through foundation administrations. The association therefore represents more foundations than it has members. Around two thirds of the foundation's assets in Germany are tied up in the member foundations.
