The community foundations initiative is the competence center of the Federal Association of German Foundations for community foundations in Germany. It was set up in 2001 by a funding consortium consisting of foundations and the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth . Her main tasks are advising and training community foundations, start-up initiatives and individuals.
structure
The office with four full-time employees and two freelancers is located in Berlin, in the House of German Foundations. In addition, 14 voluntary regional curators from community foundations in the various federal states support the work. The community foundations initiative offers targeted qualification measures for community foundations with strategy and themed workshops as part of its community foundation workshop. For the local exchange between the community foundations, the community foundations initiative organizes regional meetings (RegionalTreffs) several times a year. As part of the community foundations working group, between 100 and 200 community foundation representatives meet once a year at various locations in Germany.
seal of approval
The Federal Association of German Foundations has been awarding a seal of approval for community foundations since 2003 . The seal of approval is awarded to community foundations whose statutes meet the "10 characteristics of a community foundation" . The 10 characteristics define a community foundation as a non-profit, politically and denominationally independent foundation from citizens for citizens with a broad foundation purpose and a local radius of action. The review of the statutes of a community foundation for the 10 characteristics and the decision on the award of the seal of approval is carried out by an independent jury made up of community donors and community foundation experts. As of October 1, 2015, 293 community foundations in Germany had the seal of approval.
