Michael Göring (born July 30, 1956 in Lippstadt , Westphalia ) is chairman of the board of the ZEIT Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius , from 2014 to 2018 chairman of the board of the Federal Association of German Foundations and author .

Live and act

Göring was born as the son of Heinz Otto and Marlies Göring in Lippstadt and graduated from high school there in 1975. After studying English , geography (with a focus on economic geography ), American studies and philosophy at the Universities of Cologne, Swansea (Great Britain) and Wayne State Detroit (USA), he passed his state examination in Munich in 1983. There the scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation received his doctorate in 1986 in English literary studies with the dissertation Melodrama heute, the adaptation of melodramatic elements and structures in the work of John Arden and Arden / D'Arcy. In 1986 he also worked as a university assistant at the University of Munich.

After serving as an academic advisor at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich , Michael Göring moved to Bonn in 1988 to join the German National Academic Foundation. From 1993 he was head of the funding department of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation in Essen. Michael Göring has been a managing member of the board since 1997, and chairman of the board of the ZEIT Foundation Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius in Hamburg since 2005 .

Since 2001 he has also been an honorary professor in the field of foundations at the Institute for Culture and Media Management at the University of Music and Theater in Hamburg.

In 2006, Professor Michael Göring received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to the foundation. In 2019 Göring was awarded the Dr. Günther Buch Prize 2019 for his work in the field of humanities, foundations and as a novelist.

In the Federal Association of German Foundations , Göring had been a board member since July 1, 2008, from June 1, 2011, Deputy Chairman of the Board, and from May 22, 2014 to May 17, 2018, Chairman of the Board. He is also chairman of the supervisory board of the Bucerius Law School , chairman of the board of trustees of the Bucerius Kunst Forum , member of the boards of trustees of Hamburger Sparkasse , the Hamburger Kunstsammlungen foundation and other foundations, and deputy chairman of the Hamburg advisory board of Deutsche Bank .

Göring is one of the initiators of the Charter of Digital Fundamental Rights of the European Union , which was published at the end of November 2016.
