Axel Freiherr von Campenhausen (born January 23, 1934 in Göttingen ) is a retired German university professor and canon lawyer .

biography

Axel Freiherr von Campenhausen is the son of the theologian Hans Freiherr von Campenhausen and his wife. He studied law , Protestant theology and political science in Heidelberg , Göttingen , Cologne, Bonn, Paris and London and received his doctorate in 1962 at the University of Göttingen . After his habilitation (1967) he was Professor of Canon Law at the University of Munich for ten years , then Professor of Public Law and Canon Law in Göttingen. From 1970 to 2008 he headed the Canon Law Institute of the Evangelical Church in Germany .

The then Prime Minister Ernst Albrecht appointed him from 1976 to 1979 as State Secretary in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Art. In 1978 he became President of the Hanover Monastery Chamber . During this time he was also a member of the Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hanover . He caused a sensation there in 1986 with his statement that South Africa was "the only free state in sub-Saharan Africa".

From 1993 to 2002 Freiherr von Campenhausen was a member of the board of the Federal Association of German Foundations and from 1996 its chairman; with his departure he was elected an honorary member. From 1991 to 2011 he was Canon of the United Cathedral Donors ; since then he has been the canon of honor.

The Baltic Corporation Fraternitas Dorpatensis to Munich took him in 1988 as honorary Philistines in their connection to. In 2019 he received the W. Rainer Walz Prize awarded by the Institute for Foundation Law and the Law of Non-Profit Organizations at the Bucerius Law School for his life's work .

Axel Freiherr von Campenhausen was co-editor of the weekly newspaper " Rheinischer Merkur " for several years .

Freiherr von Campenhausen is a supporter of the Center against Expulsions .
