Canon Law Institute of the Evangelical Church in Germany

With the decision of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) on December 14, 1945, the Institute for Canon Law was founded. It is based in Göttingen . For a time it was based in Munich.

According to § 1 of the regulations of the EKD's Canon Law Institute, it has the mandate to advise the EKD and its member churches as well as church associations on questions of church and state church law. The EKD's Canon Law Institute prepares legal opinions. State courts also make use of the institute's expert services.

The institute is also charged with carrying out advanced training courses for members of the church administrations. It also promotes the importance of church and state church law in university teaching and creates legal sources for the EKD official gazette.

The editorial office of the Journal for Protestant Canon Law is also affiliated with the Canon Law Institute .

Head of the institute

The first director of the institute was Rudolf Smend , on whose initiative the institute was founded. He worked there from 1945 to 1969. He was followed by Axel Freiherr von Campenhausen from 1969 to 2008. Hans Michael Heinig took over this position from him .

Publications

The results of the expert work have appeared in the edited volumes of the Jus Ecclesiasticum series. Lastly, the Göttingen reports III are brought. Numerous other legal opinions have been published as articles.
