The Bürgerpark Feudenheim (also Bürgerpark Am Wingertsbuckel) is located in the northwest of the Mannheim district of the same name . It differs fundamentally from the other Mannheim parks in terms of its concept and appearance.

Park and facilities

The tree-lined park landscape, which has gradually grown into an arboretum over the past few years , merges smoothly into the neighboring agricultural area. Since December 14, 1988, 760 trees have been planted by almost 570 donors in the Feudenheim public park as part of tree-planting campaigns. In addition to the nature-protected dry biotope Bell, the existing orchards are worth mentioning.

On the approx. 40 hectare large open space between urban settlement areas and the Spinelli Barracks to the west, visitors can also use play and sports facilities, such as the skater track built in 1999, the BMX course created in 2007 and the children's playground added in 2008. Finally, a radio telescope is operated in the Bürgerpark .

The park can be reached by tram line 7, Talstraße stop.

Bell dry biotope

The area of the dry biotope is located on an approx. 2000 m² sand dune and has remained largely natural. As a result, a sandy lawn vegetation was able to develop, which offers rare plant and animal species a retreat. While the Bell serves many animals as a stopover (so-called stepping stone biotope) between the sandy areas in the north and south of Mannheim (e.g. the Rheinau Forest), it is important as a fresh air corridor and cold air generation area for the city as a whole. The dune vegetation has meanwhile been placed under protection as a natural monument.

The drifting sand area is characterized by extreme ecological conditions: drought, nutrient deficiency and temperature fluctuations between day and night of up to 50 degrees (with summer surface temperatures of up to 70 degrees) make this extreme location to which flora and fauna have to adapt accordingly: On the Bell mainly include plants and animals that have been imported or immigrated from the Mediterranean region or the steppe regions of Eastern Europe. Many of the plant species present in the Bell are very frugal (rough grass varieties such as the hard sheep fescue ), have strong hair ( ox tongue , shaggy vetch ), have layers of wax on the leaves ( sharp stonecrop ), extremely deep ones ( field mugwort ) or very shallow root system or are parasites ( sand summer root ). The sand dune is also characterized by a large variety of insects. In addition to sand and silk bees , there are 9 other species of protected and rare insects. Also, pheasants , skylarks and garden warblers are common here.
