Special traffic

Express trains

To strengthen this, some additional trips are offered on express lines that do not stop at all stops:

  • 9 Heidelberg - Mannheim - Ludwigshafen - Bad Dürkheim (only on Sundays and public holidays in the summer months), connects as RNV-Express: Heidelberg (HSB), Mannheim (MVV), Ludwigshafen (VBL) and Bad Dürkheim (RHB) and runs between Heidelberg and Mannheim on the tracks of the OEG.

All lines are operated by the RNV.

Call taxis

  • 1003 Friedrichsfeld - Alteichwaldsiedlung (addition to line 43)

The Ruftaxis have 30 minutes before the desired departure be ordered by telephone. A special tariff applies, but annual and semi-annual VRN cards are accepted.

Ferries

There are two ferries in Mannheim. The Rhine ferry Altrip-Mannheim connects Neckarau with Altrip, the Altrhein ferry Sandhofen connects Sandhofen with the Friesenheimer Insel. The Altrhein ferry, built in 1897, is the oldest operational ferry in Germany.

history

Connection to the railway network

As early as 1840 Mannheim received a railway connection with the opening of the first stage of the Rhine Valley Railway to Heidelberg , and later Karlsruhe to Basel. With the opening of the Main-Neckar-Bahn from Frankfurt am Main in 1846, the Rhine bridge to the Palatinate Ludwigsbahn over to Ludwigshafen am Rhein and the Riedbahn to Frankfurt am Main in 1879, Mannheim became an important railway junction.

Further smaller route extensions were the Mannheim-Friedrichsfeld (then Friedrichsfeld (Baden) North) -Schwetzingen route in 1880 . Today it is only used for freight traffic. The Mannheim-Rheinau-Ketsch railway was opened in two stages: 1905 to Brühl and in 1912 Ketsch was finally reached. The line was discontinued in 1966 and has since been dismantled.

Inner-city traffic

The history of inner-city passenger transport began with a horse-drawn tram , the first lines of which opened in 1878. On May 3, 1884, the first steam tram from Feudenheim to Mannheim was opened. Electric tram operation began in 1900. The first bus line in Mannheim was opened on November 29, 1925 by the OEG. In 1971 the first and to this day only tunnel section was opened in Mannheim. It runs under the Luisenring and has a stop on Dalbergstrasse. From 1992 to 2005 there was a track bus route in Feudenheim for one direction of travel on the tracks of the tram, which is there on a separate track body.

Change of corporate structure

Train of the OEG in the new colors of the RNV

In 1999 the Mannheimer Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (MVG) was renamed MVV Verkehr AG .

In 2000, the OEG was bought by MVV and renamed MVV OEG AG. It has been in operation since 2002 together with the Mannheim trams operated by MVV Verkehr AG.

On October 1, 2004, the five transport companies that operate the coherent meter-gauge network and mentioned at the beginning of the article founded a joint subsidiary, Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr GmbH (RNV), which is intended to achieve cost savings and better competitiveness. The infrastructure as well as the concessions initially remained with MVV; the majority of the vehicles went to RNV as part of the capital contribution, which has been providing transport services on behalf of MVV since March 1, 2005. The low-floor trams of the type 6MGT purchased in 1994 and 1995 could not be brought into the RNV due to cross-border leasing . The concessions have been with the RNV since October 1, 2009, and the operation, maintenance and expansion of the infrastructure is the responsibility of the RNV.
