The Mannheim-Käfertal station is a through station in Mannheim district Käfertal . The station is classified in station category 6 of DB Station & Service and has three platform tracks

history

On May 29, 1869, the Grand Ducal Hessian Prime Minister Reinhard Carl Friedrich von Dalwigk opened the Riedbahn from Darmstadt via Goddelau and Biblis to the Rosengarten train station on the east side of the Rhine opposite Worms. In October 1879, the branch from Biblis via Waldhof to Mannheim's Neckarstadt was extended, where it ended at Mannheim-Neckarstadt station , north of today's Kurpfalzbrücke .

In 1880 a bypass of Mannheim with a route via Käfertal and the Rhine Valley Railway was completed. Now the trains of the Riedbahn could run on a curve to the south continuously to Mannheim main station. The Käferthal-Wohlhotels train station was built on this bypass . It was renamed Mannheim-Käferthal on November 1, 1904 and Mannheim-Käfertal on May 1, 1907 . On February 19, 1916, a fifth, almost 700 m long overtaking track was put into operation in the station.

On June 2, 1985, the western introduction of the Riedbahn (WER) went into operation. Since most of the trains now drove over the west of Mannheim to Mannheim main station, the Mannheim-Käfertal station lost its importance for passenger traffic . In the 2019 timetable, only one pair of trains on line RB 2 stops on the Karlsruhe Hbf - Waghäusel - Mannheim Hbf - Lampertheim - Biblis line at Mannheim-Käfertal station. In freight traffic , the route between Mannheim-Waldhof, Mannheim-Käfertal and Mannheim Hbf is still regularly used with 180 pairs of trains per day, as the Mannheim industrial port railway branches off from the Riedbahn shortly after the station and this route does not go through the main station from the marshalling yard to the Riedbahn.

traffic

Regional traffic

In 1914, 22 local passenger trains on the Mannheim - Frankfurt route and seven local trains between Mannheim and Worms stopped at the station; in 1944 there were still 21 trains.

In later years up to 2018, Deutsche Bahn operated the station for passenger traffic exclusively on weekdays except Saturdays with the single train 38852 on line RB 2, which only went in one direction from Karlsruhe to Biblis. Since the timetable change in December 2018, a pair of trains on the RB 2 Biblis - Karlsruhe line has stopped at the station Monday to Friday during rush hour (as of 2018/19 timetable). The 38895 train in the direction of Karlsruhe only runs from Mannheim-Waldhof to Manheim Hbf.

future

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment and Transport announced in 2011 that the second track of the eastern Riedbahn in Mannheim should be reactivated by 2015 and the line should be upgraded for S-Bahn traffic . In Mannheim-Neuostheim, a new S-Bahn station is to be built at the Dürer junction. At that time it was planned that from December 2015 an hourly S-Bahn between Biblis and Mannheim Hbf would run on the route. However, this will not be possible until the end of 2018 at the earliest.
