history

The first as horse course operated tram Trier opened the 1890th Electrical operation began on July 21, 1905. The horse tram disappeared from the cityscape. There were three tram lines that connected the Porta Nigra with the main train station and the districts of Trier-Nord , Pallien , Euren and St. Medard . The planned lines to Feyen and Ehrang as well as to the suburb of Konz were never realized. The last tram ran on September 14, 1951. Most of the tracks were removed, but some of them were also tarred. For example, in Jüdemerstrasse on the Viehmarktplatz , a track appears again under the swelling asphalt.

The trolleybus operated in Trier between 1942 and 1970 . It initially replaced some tram lines and completely replaced them in 1951. The trolleybuses ran largely on the same routes as the tram. The only extension was the construction of a line to Weismark ; Here you can still see the massive concrete catenary masts, which have been used for street lighting ever since . The first omnibuses came into service in Trier at the end of the 1960s and were mostly converted trolleybuses.

Like the omnibuses, trolleybuses and trams ran through what is now Trier's pedestrian zone, past the main market and the Kornmarkt. Plans to build a tunnel under the city center failed; today the buses go around this.

In the past, the Moselle Railway to Bullay began right at Trier Central Station . The track in Kürenzer Straße and some industrial tracks in Trier-Nord on Metternichstraße are still relics today.

Present and Future

Today the Trier local transport network is operated exclusively with the above-mentioned bus and regional bus routes.

Since the 1990s there have been plans to build a separate public transport route from the city center on the Petrisberg to the university . However, due to uncertain passenger numbers and a lack of financing options, this idea was discarded in mid-2012, although it should be considered as a long-term alternative.

In order to increase the attractiveness between the city center and the Tarforster Plateau in the short term, plans are being made to renovate the ailing Kürenzer Strasse and extend it to Metternichstrasse. to be extended (so-called Moselle railway breakthrough ). With this new route and with the help of express buses , the travel time between the main train station and the university is to be reduced from the current eleven to eight minutes.

There are also considerations, the local rail as part of Rhineland-Palatinate clock expand and has long been not traveled in passenger Trier West Railway to use it for this. For this, however, at least one station must be rebuilt; Due to the difficult municipal financial situation, the realization is uncertain. In the long term, several stops are planned in the city, including on the main route, including (counterclockwise from the main train station): Trier Nord, Mäusheckerweg, Pallien, Westbahnhof , Messepark / Euren, Zewen, Feyen and Kaiserthermen.

The consolidation of the timetable frequency of the railway line to Thionville in cross-border traffic from Perl is planned by the regional rail passenger transport association Rhineland-Palatinate North .
