Local transport in Mainz
The transport in Mainz is through the bus - and tram lines of Mainzer transport company (MVG) and the eswe verkehrsgesellschaft provided. In addition, the urban area is served by regional and S-Bahn trains operated by DB and vlexx . The central hub for local transport in Mainz is the main train station . All regional and S-Bahn trains that travel to Mainz stop here, and all regional bus lines, tram lines and most city bus lines continue to stop here. However, due to the increasing utilization of the bus stop system due to improved services, it is not possible to have all city bus lines stop there. For example, lines 6, 64 and 65 pass the main train station and alternatively stop at the “Hauptbahnhof West” stop.
Urban transport
City bus
The inner-city bus traffic in Mainz is provided on 25 day and 4 night lines mostly by MVG (since 2017 under the Mainz mobility brand ) and to a lesser extent by ESWE and ORN . The two neighboring cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden have a common numbering scheme for their bus and tram lines, so that there is no confusion in the closely interlinked public transport of both cities due to double assignment of line numbers. This was introduced in 2000 when the route network was reorganized. Since then, all Wiesbaden lines have numbers between 1 and 49, all Mainz lines numbers between 50 and 99. Before that, there were bus routes in Mainz and Wiesbaden with the same number. Lines 6, 9 and 28 are shared lines that are operated jointly by MVG and ESWE and connect Mainz and Wiesbaden. Line 33 is a specialty: although it runs exclusively in Wiesbaden city area, it is operated by MVG. The reason for this is historical, today's Wiesbaden district of Mainz-Kostheim was part of Mainz until 1945. Even if Wiesbaden grew in the course of regional reforms at the expense of Mainz (see also AKK conflict ), the Mainz municipal utilities retained the concessions for the lines leading there. The lines leading from Mainz to Mainz-Kastel (Wiesbaden) are also operated exclusively by MVG.

Lines 6, 9, 28 and 33 are joint lines with ESWE Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH , lines 66, 68 and 75 are operated jointly with ORN Omnibusverkehr Rhein-Nahe GmbH . However, only ORN buses run on line 75, which means that it has the character of a regional bus.
In the Mainz city area there are also four other lines of the ORN (620, 650, 652 and 660), which are operated exclusively by the latter and operate in the Mainz city area as express lines, i.e. without stopping at all stops on the route. Nevertheless, the tickets of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund are valid here in the Mainz city area.

Lines 9, 28 and 54 to 78 are pure day lines, lines 90, 91, 92 and 93 are pure night lines. There is both day and night traffic on lines 6 and 66.
Lines 66 and 78 are a special feature of the Mainz route network. They are the only bus routes that do not touch either the city center or the main train station.
Line 66 was shortened to the Ebersheim - Hechtsheim section after the project of a tram line from Hechtsheim to Ebersheim as an extension of today's lines 50 and 51 failed in 1997 due to a negative cost-benefit factor. Then the new route was created with the aim of an economical yet good public transport connection of this district, after a so-called backe -to- backe transfer stop had been built in Hechtsheim am Mühldreieck , i.e. a stop that is covered on the same bus platform / platform you can change to the tram / bus that continues.
Line 78, which emerged from the former line 45, is a pure tangential line connecting the Mombach district with the university campus.
From mid-2019, 4 fuel cell buses are to be used as part of the H2Bus Rhein-Main project, including 2 solo and 2 articulated buses from the manufacturer Autosan in Sanok (Poland). The range should be 300 km with a 15 minute filling. The necessary infrastructure is provided in Wiesbaden on the premises of ESWE Verkehr in the form of a hydrogen filling station. The shared bus line passes the depot at the main train station. Wiesbaden will also receive 4 and Frankfurt am Main 3 of these fuel cell buses as part of the 6-year project.
With the timetable change in December 2019, major changes were made to the route network. The new line 74 connects the districts of Gonsenheim, Bretzenheim and Hechtsheim directly without going through the city center.
tram
In addition to the city bus lines, MVG operates a tram network with five lines. The length is currently 29.7 kilometers. The tram has a share of less than 10% of the entire MVG route network (with bus routes), but it carries almost 25% of all passengers in the entire network (as of 2007).

MVGmeinRad
MVGmeinRad is a bike rental program launched in 2012 by the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft, which operates stations throughout Mainz, in the former districts of Mainz on the right bank of the Rhine and in Budenheim . Most of these stations are located at bus or train stops. In addition, there is a tariff interlinking with the normal ticket offer of the MVG, so there are discounts for holders of season tickets. " MVGmeinRad " is therefore to be seen as a supplement to the rest of the local public transport system in Mainz.
Regional bus
Mainz is served by ORN regional buses . Within the city of Mainz, these lines operate as a kind of express bus and only serve selected stops. The transition between city and regional bus routes is rather fluid. Many city bus routes leave the Mainz city area and also take on regional bus routes in the surrounding area. These lines emerged from the merger of MVG and ORN lines and are operated as joint lines by both companies.

Community lines created from the amalgamation of city and regional bus routes that extend into the surrounding area and perform regional bus tasks there are city bus routes 66, 68 and 75. Both MVG buses and ORN buses are used there.
railroad
Mainz is very well developed by rail traffic. There is a long-distance train station with the main train station ; there are also the Mombach, Marienborn, Gonsenheim, Waggonfabrik, Mainz Nord, Roman Theater and Laubenheim stops served by S-Bahn and regional trains . The train stations Mainz-Kastel , Mainz-Gustavsburg and Mainz-Bischofsheim belong to Mainz only in name, see also " AKK conflict ".
Train
Mainz is connected to the Frankfurt S-Bahn system by the S8 line. In addition, the S1 and S9 lines run via Mainz-Kastel, which is close to the city center and formerly part of Mainz. In the course of the further expansion of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn , Mainz has also been reached by the S6 from Mannheim since 2018. The trains are all barrier-free.

car sharing
There is a cooperation between the MVG and the car sharing provider book-n-drive , which results in discounts for season ticket holders of the MVG (with the exception of job and semester tickets). book-n-drive is represented in all cities in the Rhine-Main area . As in other cities, car sharing - even if it is not part of public transport - can usefully complement the public transport network.
Tariff
Transport associations
There are three transport associations in Mainz : the Mainz-Wiesbaden transport association (VMW), the Rhein-Main transport association (RMV) and the Rhine-Nahe local transport association (RNN). In terms of tariffs, the VMW is no longer relevant today, but it means that Mainz is part of the RMV and Wiesbaden part of the RNN. The RMV tariff is always used for trips within the VMW area (Mainz and Wiesbaden city area) and from the VMW area to the Hessian area, and for trips from the VMW area to the Rhineland-Palatinate area the RNN. This is relevant for the bus routes 54, 61, 66, 68 and 75 as well as for the regional buses of the ORN, which operate beyond the Mainz city limits into the Rhine-Hessian area.
Semester ticket
A semester ticket is offered for € 204.19 for students at Mainz universities ( Johannes Gutenberg University , Mainz University , Catholic University ). This applies in the entire RMV area, in the RNN area and can be extended to the VRN area if necessary .
Historical
The community tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Mainz-Wiesbaden (VMW) has existed since 1975. All bus and tram lines of Stadtwerke Mainz and Stadtwerke Wiesbaden as well as S-Bahn and regional trains between Mainz-Kastel and Wiesbaden Hbf or Mainz Süd (today Mainz Römisches Theater) and Wiesbaden Hbf. The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) came into force for the summer schedule, replacing the VMW at tariff level. In 1999, Mainz was also integrated into the Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrsverbund (RNN). The VMW is thus little present in the public eye, but it is still of great importance today: Mainz as a non-Hessian city is not a partner of the RMV. The integration into this takes place via the VMW and the city of Wiesbaden as a shareholder. Conversely, Wiesbaden is integrated into the Rhineland-Palatinate RNN via the VMW.
History of local transport in Mainz
Historical overview
Local public transport in (today's) Mainz metropolitan area for the first time with the opening of the Mainz – Mannheim line in 1853. The rail routes to Cologne , Aschaffenburg , Frankfurt and Alzey followed by 1871 . It should be noted, however, that of all current (and also former) Mainz train stations, only the Südbahnhof was within the city limits at that time, and since the importance of the Mainz Süd - Mainz Hauptbahnhof line for inner-city local transport seems negligible due to the short distance alone there was no question of local transport in the sense of public transport .
This is the beginning of the history of Mainz's local transport with the horse-drawn tram , which opened in 1883 and was driven out by the steam tram until 1904 . Also in 1904 the electrification of the tram began , so the last time a steam tram ran through Mainz in 1923. In 1927 the first bus line was finally opened in Mainz, which ran from the main train station via Bretzenheim / Drais to Nieder-Olm . Other bus routes, including those in the city, soon followed. After the Second World War , the Mainz trolleybus was opened in 1946 and operated in the cathedral city until 1967. In 1975, the Mainz-Wiesbaden transport association was the first to set up a tariff community in the two neighboring cities. In 1983 Mainz was reached for the first time by the S 14 (now S8) of the Rhein-Main S-Bahn . A major turning point in local traffic in Mainz occurred in 1999/2000 when, as part of a fundamental line network reform, a common numbering scheme was agreed with Wiesbaden, in the course of which all Mainz lines are marked with the numbers 50-99. The currently newest mode of transport came to Mainz in 2012 with MVGmeinRad . Most recently, the Mainz line network was subject to major changes at the end of 2016 when the new tram route to Lerchenberg went into operation.
With the Verein Straßenbahnfreunde Mainz eV, there is a non-profit association whose aim is, among other things, to process the history of Mainz's local transport and to preserve historically valuable vehicles and operating facilities of Mainz's local public transport system. As part of the association's work, for example, special trips with historical vehicles or lectures on topics related to the history of traffic are organized. In addition, the association newspaper Die Elektrisch , which deals with Mainz local transport, appears four times a year at a price of € 3; Special issues are also published on special occasions.
Line network reform 2017
With the opening of the new tram route to Lerchenberg ("Mainzelbahn") in December 2016, far-reaching changes in the Mainz route network came into force. While some lines remained unchanged, the alignment of other lines was changed considerably. Some lines were also completely eliminated.
The following routes were current until December 2016:

future
Bus route across the university campus
In the course of the Mainzelbahn, a new bus route will also be opened, which will connect the university campus with the university of applied sciences and the stadium and will be on the route 78. A bridge over Koblenzer Strasse that was built for this purpose became the subject of an episode of the NDR format " extra 3 - derreal insanity " in January 2016 . It is criticized that the bridge has been completed, but the road connection (and thus the possibility of a regular bus service) could not be established due to incorrect planning within the administration. The bridge was not connected to bus traffic until 2019.
Extension of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn
The new line S6 of the S-Bahn RheinNeckar has been running between Mannheim and Mainz since June 10, 2018 and replaced the regional train line RB 44, which had been operating in advance with adapted S-Bahn vehicles of the 425 series until then S6 with new vehicles of the type Siemens Mireo from Bensheim via Mannheim and Worms to Mainz as well as to Wiesbaden at peak times. In addition to the main train station, the Römisches Theater and Laubenheim stations are served within the Mainz urban area. A link between the Rhein-Main and Rhein-Neckar S-Bahn systems was established for the first time at Mainz main train station and the Roman Theater train station .
Mainz Bismarckplatz train station
A new train station in the Neustadt district with the project name Mainz Bismarckplatz is also being considered . Regional trains to Alzey, Ingelheim (and further into the Rheintal / Nahetal) and S-Bahn lines on the S8 will stop there. In addition to upgrading the neighboring districts, the new station promises to relieve the Mainz main station as well as improved transfer options from Alzey and Ingelheim to Wiesbaden and vice versa. It is still unclear whether the new station will replace the nearby Mainz Nord (S8) and Mainz-Waggonfabrik ( vlexx Mainz Hbf – Alzey) stations. A concrete plan is expected to be presented within the next few months (status: autumn 2015).
Fusion of ESWE and MVG?
At the local political level, calls for a merger of the two municipal operating companies ESWE (Wiesbaden) and MVG (Mainz) are loud. This is justified with the already close cooperation between the two companies and the prospect of financial savings through the elimination of administrative levels. The rnv in the nearby Rhine-Neckar area , which emerged from the merger of the transport companies in Mannheim , Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg as well as the OEG and the RHB, could serve as a model .
